Nope a "apt search avant-window-manager" returns NO items. This is a clean install with a couple of ppa's added, and the new testing repo.
Wonder wny it is in yours and not mine?

This is WIERD!
I just downloaded it from Debian. When I load it using GdebI it says same version in repositry. But when I open Synaptic I can't find it

OK found it it it is listed as Navigator not Manager my bad!

Ok bad news.
Just rebooted after the updates (all 500Mb of them) and it just loops on the pre-boot screen. Now I have 4 (!) Debian editions listed in my grub menu for some reason.
Code: Select all
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober_proxy ###

Several seem to be missing a linux kernel though.
What should I have or should I just run grub-update again?

I cannot comprehend how you managed to generate a grub.cfg like that - are you still using burg? If so get rid of it because it is crap. Items 1,2,4 and 5 in that list are never going to boot because they have incorrect addresses in them - try booting the third item, it might stand a chance.

Ok removed them, ran install-grub then booted and tried installing the Nvidia driver. This cause a crash/loop at boot only way out is to reboot.
Is there a correct way of installing the Nv driver? I just installed the packages using Synaptic.

All you should need to do is to install nvidia-glx which will install all the other packages you need and then reboot, but I guess that isn't working for you. Do you have a 'recovery' mode entry to boot into?

Ok will try again.
Since this is a fresh install I am just wiping and starting again since I haven't installed anything yet, quicker than booting and trying to remove packages.
Now on the 9th install (I think :D )

If I can get it working with NV driver I will try again with the testing repo.

Thanks again for all the help.

Congratulations on your persistence - we like people like that, in many instances I would have been given the "Linux is rubbish, I'm going back to Windows rant by now".

Btw be a bit careful about calling the Nvidia driver the NV driver, because the default video driver in Linux is called Nouveau and NV is a pretty good abbreviation for that as well. For a moment I thought you were asking me how to install the Nouveau driver.

Nah, I left M$ behind about 4 years ago, Mint has been my main disrto for past 3 years :D

OK now semi working.. I have the Nvidia driver installed. I used smxi but had some issues getting grub updated as /boot is on sda3 and LMDE is on sda1. Every time I update it from sda3 (Mint 11) it adds empty kernels to the grub.cfg.
Getting a dab hand at manually editing it now :)

Still lost Awn, not in the default installed sources and the d/led package is missing a library.

Still gives me something to do :D

Ok now with a 3.0 kernel installed.
Avant still eludes me.

My sources.list
Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

What do I need to add to get the package listed?

Update:-
Ok added:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib

and that seems to have enabled me to install it.

I guess you are trying to track the 'latest' repos are you? Which update pack are you using, 2 or 3?

This was posted a week ago for pack 3, but I don't know if it applies to update pack 2 or not as I don't use it.

UPDATE PACK 3 FEEDBACK THREAD

Postby clem on Tue Aug 30, 2011 10:36 am
Update Pack 3 is ready for you to test ;)

WARNING: LMDE Update Packs now cover not only the Debian repository, but also the "Security" and "Multimedia" repos. Make absolutely sure you're pointing to these three repositories (and not to the original debian, security or multimedia repos):

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia testing main non-free

If you want to track 'latest' then you would need to change the word 'incoming' to 'latest' in those addresses.

You also need your original line:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport

As well as those three.

Maybe then you will get awn, I don't know, but it is definitely there.

I am on SP2.
I tried adding them and chaging testing to lastest but get:-
W: Failed to fetch http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/secu ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/secu ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/secu ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/mult ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found

So have removed them for now.

Ok but the errors you show there are from security and multimedia repos and awn does not come from either of these it comes from main which shows no errors. Did you look for awn after you ran the update?

If you did and you couldn't find it, try downloading from this link to awn instead:

http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/avant ... -navigator

If there are any missing packages here then go back to that link and you will see links to all the dependencies required to install that program. If awn is important to you then download the dependencies one at a time until it works.

Yes it is a pain, but there must be something wrong with your sources and unfortunately I don't know what it is, so this is the alternative plan.

I may just give up on this for the moment. A working system is better than one with bells & whistles :)

I am just about to rebuild my original Mint 11 setup and see if I can get Nero working again, at least I have LMDE as a backup system.

That was the post I started with. Originally I intended to use the testing one, but after (another) failed grub problem (I think my grub was corrupt since it wouldn’t boot to the UUID's of 2 other drives) I rebuilt and tried latest, but for some reason the AWN package isn't in them although it is a Debian package in SID & Wheezy.
I have it installed (using the ftp.uk.debian.org) but it is different to my one on my Mint 11 system even though I can tried using my existing cfg file. All I have is crashed applets and a complaint that no compositing manager is installed even though the Nvidia closed driver is installed and Compiz is working (i.e. I have the rotating cube) so I have given up trying to use it as my main distro and rebuilt this one (Katyla) to see if my Nero problem still exists (which it doesn't on LMDE).

hairybiker,
sorry for the delay in returning to this topic :(
- i went though the topic and see that basically to the end you have 2 problems:

1- the errors in the sources.list: if you decide to track latest, security and multimedia are not yet in the linuxmint mirrors, so your souces.list have to look like this
Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

2- awn: was removed from debian before update-pack2 (the one you have installed in your system if you are tracking latest - that's why you can't find it in synaptic) but migrated again after (that's why if you add the testing repo
Code: Select all
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib
you will find it - yeahh, i know sounds a bit confusing but i hope i made it more or less clear - i tried  )
- now, this v. that was updated to the testing repo has a few problems (as you already found) and you can see some reports here viewtopic.php?f=187&t=80386&p=467675&hilit=awn#p467680 in this same thread you also find tips to install the ubuntu v. (that apparently works well)

i hope i didn't miss nothing  but if i did, just say

Thanks for that. Will update my sources list next time I boot into LMDE.

Just had "issues" with my Mint 11 not installing the Nvidia driver but defaulting to the free one, even though it was installed using the Additional Drivers prog  It was stuck at installed /not activated and I couldn't get it to activate - so no World Of Goo for me

So have just re-formatted sda3 and installed it FIRST now am restoring my apps using mint backup restore s/w.
