DVD encryption library problem, again! [SOLVED, kinda]

Postby M.O.D on Fri Sep 09, 2011 5:20 am

Hi all!

I just recently installed Linux Mint 11 on an Asus F5 Entertainment System. Everything rocks (now that Windows Vista is out!). The only problem is that I can't play DVD:s.

This is not the first time I have encountered this, but this is the first time I can't solve it!

I have followed this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Restr ... layingDVDs - Doesn't work.

And this guide (post no. 2): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1737727 - Doesn't work.

Yes, Ubuntu restricted extras are installed.

I have searched this forum, but found nothing that cleared this issue.

Any help would be appreicated.

Best!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

...seems to be the pesky ”region” settings (why, why, WHYYYYYYY!!?!?) that was the problem. Plus, the DVD-player itself is a bit worse for wear it seems.

Thanks for reading.

Did you install from a Linux Mint CD or DVD? The CD comes without codecs you need to play restricted formats, such as MP3 and DVD. The DVD comes with these codecs.

If you installed from the CD version, from the welcome screen (Alt+F2, then type: mintwelcome) you have a button on the lower left that says "Upgrade to the DVD edition". Do that.

As for region settings, that is not an issue with VLC media player. So play your DVDs with VLC.

For different region dvds, and with some of my dvd drives i've been unable to flash to region free, I install DVDDecrypter under WINE, and use it to rip the disc to drive, watch the result with VLC, and perhaps re-encode with Handbrake to a nice MKV file for future use. :)
