AMD Proprietary Drivers

Post by billt79 »

I installed wine the other day into LMDE 64 bit so in my spare time at 6th form i could do a bit of gaming, anyways i got them working, had to add a line to the wine registry because glsl doesn't mix with ati, and i installed the amd proprietary drivers because the open source ones dont work with the games i want (stuff like NFS Carbon) anyways when i rebooted it booted straight to terminal because it couldn't detect a screen so i had to delete xorg.conf and reinstall the open source radeon drivers and remove fglrx and now the games dont work, does anyone know any work arounds? i have an acer aspire 5551 with an ati mobility radeon hd4200. I have tried a few how to's but not really got anywhere just got the same problem. cheers in advance

After you install the proprietary drivers you have to run

Code: Select all

sudo ati-config --initial
to generate a new xorg.

I dont even get that far, i know where i went wrong before, which was not unloading the radeon drivers properly, but now when i go to install fglrx i get this

Code: Select all

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  glx-alternative-fglrx: Breaks: fglrx-driver (< 1:11-7-4) but 1:11-6-2 is to be installed.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) fglrx-control [Not Installed]
2) fglrx-driver [Not Installed]
3) fglrx-glx [Not Installed]
4) fglrx-glx-ia32 [Not Installed]

     Leave the following dependencies unresolved:
5) fglrx-atieventsd recommends fglrx-driver (= 1:11-6-2)

and nothing gets installed, im not sure if it has anything to do with my repositorys which i can list

Code: Select all

wheezy has fglrx 11-8,

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
should do it

I am using AMD testing drivers, but Wine does not work with sound, except the first song for Spotify.

I think Wine must be put inside the distro as an optional package to install - probably most of us will install it - and be well tested for AMD, ATI and Intel graphics and integrated audio.

Even Sabayon has its own wine implementation with MS WOS Nvidia and Ati drivers.

With Ubuntu I had less problems with wine, this, and not being able to change - aparently yes, but it does not work - to VLC as default video player are the only things I have found to be improved in LMDE.

well i got them installed, had to get a few depandancies from the sid repository, even with the update the fglrx from wheezy didnt want to work, they work nice now with compiz and emerald.

as for wine it seems to work fine, had to turn off glsl but the sound is fine on the games i have installed so far, although not really payed on them properly, i spent most of the day setting stuff up, il get back to you tomorrow on how good the sound is, becuase on LM11 it cut out after a while and would sometimes turn back on for a short period of time. Agreed with the optional wine install as its a pain to manually install it and all its depandancies.

Did you completely remove Pulse audio? It's long been documented that wine doesn't play nice with pulse. If so, did you also try compiling wine from source with the --with-mpg123 flag and mpg123 development files installed?

pulse audio and wine work fine for me, although if i have any future problems then i can remove it, i have noticed that wine is running slow for me though, not sure why, like in full screen games which i can run in windows fine have a little bit of lag on the controls no matter what settings i run in the graphics

I do not like to compile, I prefer PPAs because of - almost unattended upgrades -.

I'm not asking for a personal solution, I do like a lot this LMDE, and I do like it to be better.

I had not this audio problems with Ubuntu and Sabayon, having pulseaudio installed, but thanks I'll try.

But I think wine must be at the default distro packages, and well supported and tested, at least at intel/amd + nvida/amd/intel 32 and 64 bits with the tweaks it would need as for example Sabayon does

Last but not least I added PPAs support to my LMDE, I think PPAs are an excellent way of tweaking your system, of course it can cause instability, but if you use PPAs probably you are at least a semi advanced user as I consider myself.

And a PPA manager and a clever way of split main repository programs from PPAs even upgrading main repos and PPAs in different processes categorizing it as "other category" at the excellent upgrade tool would be a big step for spreading this amazing distro
