Sadly that isn't the case on my system; if I go to upgrade any of the packages shown as having updates available, Synaptic tells me that I would have to uninstall xserver-xorg, which I believe would make it impossible to load my desktop. This has been the case for several days. I don't have any proprietary drivers installed. Tracking SID.

1) stop using Synaptic for big upgrades like Xorg/KDE/Gnome
2) Use either apt-get or aptitude

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade -yd

I don't wish to do a dist-upgrade; I'm staying with Gnome 2. When I run apt-get upgrade from the terminal, it informs me that all those xserver packages are being kept back. Do the latest xserver upgrades involve a dist-upgrade of other major packages? There's no message to that effect, whatever tool I use to check upgrades.

Brian, sorry if this comes as harsh (it's not my intention) but you can not stay with gnome2, at least within LMDE (and debian testing or sid for that matter)
gnome2 is dead, all major distros are sifting to gnome3, and not following that is only going to cause you major breakages;

of course that this xorg issue is not related with the gnome2/gnome3 transition, but in rolling releases you should dist-upgrade always to keep all the system up-to-date, otherwise you are going to face problems with versions mismatch;

the other only realistic approach you have (if you really want to stay with gnome2) is to disable all sources.list, but be aware that in that case you will have a frozen system, no updates, no security fixes, nothing

zerozero - I hear you. I may end up switching to Xfce, but meanwhile I intend to go on enjoying my Gnome 2 desktop for as long as I can.

I use Synaptic as my update method of choice, and in my experience it is quite synonymous with apt. It's actually been quite a long time since I've run into an upgrade situation that Synaptic couldn't handle but apt could. Much as your results indicate, Xorg and vlc appear to be in a state of "busticated-ness" right now.

Well, I went ahead and did the full DU.
My sound, video, flash, et still work with the removals.
But VLC is gone. No biggie.
I am sure it will be back in a couple of days.

All the xorg stuff is still held back.

We still don't seem to know what exactly is going on with the xorg stuff. Any likely explanations, please? Many thanks.

Hey Brian

Just that xorg and Nvidia dont get along right now.

From APTOSID Forum

I think Xorg is waiting for Nvidia to fix it,
and Nvidia is waiting for Xorg to fix it... :lol:

That's enlightening, thanks, although a bit rough on people like me who don't use any proprietary drivers.

If you use the 'free' video drivers like radeon, radeonhd, nouveau, etc then no problem.

If you normally use the Nvidia or ATI proprietary drivers you are out of luck, and waiting for who knows how long for nvidia/ati to release a new driver that works with the new xorg.

Either way unless you have something on hold nothing is held back during an apt-get dist-upgrade. I d-u daily, todays d-u for me:
Code: Select all
The following packages will be upgraded:
  apt apt-doc apt-utils clamtk coreutils cups-pdf google-talkplugin k3b k3b-data libc-bin libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev
  libc6-i686 libk3b6 libk3b6-extracodecs locales multiarch-support opera-next python-mutagen tor tzdata xul-ext-torbutton
23 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 55.5 MB of archives.
After this operation, 7,246 kB of additional disk space will be used.

Xorg and friends were updated last week with no problems since my laptop is ancient and uses the radeon driver.
Card: ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] X.Org: 1.11.0 driver: radeon Resolution: 1024x768@60.0hz

Sorry, you've lost me. To recap, I use the 'free' video drivers and five packages (xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-input-kbd, xserver-xorg-input-mouse, xserver-xorg-video-radeon and xserver-xorg-video-vesa) continue to be held back on a 'normal' upgrade, as they have been for many weeks. On a dist-upgrade they aren't held back, but xserver-xorg would be removed, making it impossible to load the desktop.
