LMDE 201109 - Important INFO

Post by proxima_centauri »

As many have noticed, the new 201109 spin of LMDE is available via several servers.

It is important to note that in this edition, the updates from Debian are frozen via the update packs (new linuxmint repo). However, the updates from the security and multimedia repo have not been frozen - and as such are not compatible with the main Debian repo.

Because of this It is advised not to update the system if you choose to install from the new iso's.

The security and multimedia repo's will be frozen when update pack 3 is integrated and all sources should point to Mint.

EDIT: Please read the information provided in the release announcement -> http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1818
This release comes with Update Pack 2 and points to the “Linux Mint Debian Latest” repository as well as the Debian “Security” and “Multimedia” repositories.

Starting with Update Pack 3, “Security” and “Multimedia” become part of “Linux Mint Debian Latest”. When Update Pack 3 is made available, your sources will need to change and all of them will then point at Linux Mint. In the meantime, it is recommended not to apply updates coming from “Security” and “Multimedia”, as they might not be compatible with the packages in Update Pack 2.

so does this also mean that /latest will be updated today as well? If not, users will get errors about not being able to find /latest/multimedia, etc ...

That is all the information I have at the moment.

I'm sure it will all be officially explained in due time.

This is a very good and important post to read...

Thing is that I'm sure that there's quite a number of people that installed the RC that's been accepting updates through mintupdate. A bit late for us isn't it?
What can we do? We're basically already "had" in this matter... or not?

- I do have to admit that I haven't been following every thread in this forum, but I'm quite sure I would've noticed a thread with the subject saying "Stay away from multimedia & security updates if you installed the RC"... This is the first thing I see about the "problem".

It does seem a bit odd to me to release a final and then ask everyone to change their sources.list afterwards...

Is this is a FINAL release? The "RC" is missing... What does this mean, anyway? I see that it says all mint11 features are there.

I did notice that a fresh install from the 201108 iso had some differences with a fully up to date install from the 201104 iso ... I have not tried this new one yet, but I would expect that the out of box experience has even more tweaking/polish/features that do not exist on a fully up to date install from the 201104 iso. Mostly what I noticed were configuration changes to the default profile, but I did notice the md5sum and mountiso scripts that were dropped into /usr/bin, and not owned by any packages. There was gthumb instead of f-spot, and the 486 kernel, of course (why 486 anyway?) ... Hopefully future differences won't be so drastic now that we are not looking at "release candidates" anymore. I did not hunt for differences, these are things I just happened to notice pretty quickly, so I would think there are others.

I have only messed with the xfce version of lmde, so some of these statements may not be reflective of the gnome release.

Will this be addressed in any way? Are there further plans to include things that will not show up on up to date installs from previous isos? I am not sure I would quite consider it "rolling release" if each new iso provides things that aren't also somehow provided to people who installed their machines weeks/months/years earlier.

I can see how things would get pretty hairy. Devs might have to look at messing with people's user profiles, even changing packages around. Is there a "get the latest config or min-specific tweaks" metapackage that can be installed? This might be a way to make it optional for people to stay up to date with the latest tweaks that would otherwise not appear. This metapackage could also include all packages that are not part of main metapackages like mint-meta-xfce. Something like mint-meta-$DESKTOPOFCHOICE-latest-tweaks ...

Hello Folks!

I was wondering if someone could post an example or two of what our souces.list should look like before and then after Update Pack 3. To me it sounds like it should be edited like this asap.

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
#deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
#deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

Is this correct?

Thanks,
Dave

I go with:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb-src http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
deb-src http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

kudos appye, the one you posted must be the correct one. I was also confused, since I was thinking along the lines of Dave W., but if that was the case, then Clem would have simply omitted the two lines before release.

I just installed the final re-spin of 201109....it is working quite well and i am pointed to "latest" by default...what i am confused about it, for update pack 3 (when it is sent to latest) will the changes to the sources it is pointed be updated automatically in the "mint updater" first before "pack 3" is sent down or are we going to have to change them manually? And if manually, is Clem going to give exact instructions on how to do that because i am sure there are some here (like myself) that will need to guidance on exactly what we should do?

would it be correct to say that pointing to INCOMING instead of latest would fix the problem?

Also, i got the updates (and installed) pack 2 when i installed the final re-spin iso, and they included multimedia stuff (like plug ins) does that mean i will get messed up when update pack 3 is sent to latest? (since the sources are changing)...

Thing is, you will **probably** be fine having run updates on the new iso, it is just that sources.list is pointing you upstream and not to the lmde repositories, which recieve further testing before the packages get to you. Make your sources.list look like mine and updates will filter to you once /latest gets updated to look like the current /incoming. I really think the new iso should have had the sources.list pointing to /latest/multimedia and /latest/security, even though they technically don't exist yet.

I would like to know why this was done. I realize it takes care of any error messages that would have popped up about the repositories not being found, but now there are people updating their computers when it is suggested not to. Now there are going to be a bunch of "how to edit your sources.list" posts for people down the line who could have potentially broken systems due to getting their security and multimedia packages directly from upstream. The error messages seem like the lesser of two evils for sure. They would have gone away naturally!

thanks appye for the clarification on that...the update pack 2 that was available in my installed final spin iso was just these items (the chrome update is a seperate thing which is the updater from google which has nothing to do with the update pack...
So i guess these items probably won't cause any conflict with "pack 3"...

Clem did answer my inquiry on the announcement page about this saying that before sending to "latest" he was seeing if they could send down the source list changes in a "mint update" package from the mint repo....and if that works i would imagine that update would come first before update pack 3 hits "latest"....

Though I am quite pleased at the new release(s) of LMDE, I have been simply assuming that my original 201101 LMDE install is just fine -- and that I am *automatically* getting all the new stuff as it comes along -- is this correct, as far as anyone knows?

That being said, will I need to update my APT sources manually? If so, is it safe for me to do -- or is the warning in this thread applicable to me as well? My sources currently looks like this:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
deb ftp://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/debian-multimedia/ stable main
If I need to, I will simply replace all of this with what is shown above by 'appye'.

craig10x, if you update those, be aware that they are coming from UPSTREAM ... if you already have, you are probably okay. I would hold off until the update to mintupdate-debian comes down the line then, as per what clem told you... I believe it updates itself before offering any further updates though.

darethehair, I would update sources list in your case. I am not familiar with the waterloo entry though... as for your updates, yes you have been continuing to get updates to the packages that you already have, but there are other changes that were made to subsequent isos that would NOT be reflected in your system. Unless you have done things manually, you would have f-spot instead of gthumb for instance.

I already updated with the same updates in craig's screenshot, before I saw this thread. i just installed from the new ISO last night. Should I be alright?

EDIT: I just switched to the incoming repos to install update pack 3 and everything seemed to go fine. When update pack 3 goes final I'll probably set it back to latest.

I am no lmde dev, so I cannot tell you precisely, I am just saying that you are likely to be okay if the updates were already run.

Is this the correct repo's for me? This install of LMDE is from the original, SEP '09, I believe.

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

# deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
# deb-src http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo

Just recently updated to Service Pack 2 and lost use of gnome-terminal, have to currently use LXTerminal.

@kbkatz, change your sources.list from latest testing to incoming testing, update, and you should be fine. You can switch back
to latest when the mint team announces that update pack 3 is available for the latest repos.
