Gmail web client as default mail client

Post by Forkjulle »

If I click on a mailto link on the web, somewhere, Mint will open, say, a Thunderbird compose window. But let's say I don't use Thunderbird and use Gmail, via the web, as my default client. Is there a way to open mailto links in Gmail, by default? And, furthermore, is there a way to make Gmail the default mail client in Mint (11)?

Why not set up Thunderbird with your gmail account details, and send from there?

Firstly, that doesn't answer the question.

Secondly, that doesn't answer the question.

But he's asked for web Gmail not thunderbird.
Even more, I am not sure if it's possible to hide in (any mail client) thunderbird in its headers the IP you are sending from. That's why I don't like and don't use mail clients.
As for the question: it could be (didn't try yet) just set let after clicking on mailto an url with gmail account opens but not sure about any "hack-style" using web gui for gmail... :)

+Pilosopong Tasyo: nice but how it works in fact? That way just an url of gmail opens, right? And u have to log in etc.

If so, then, IMHO, it's better simply copy the link mailto and Ctrl + T (new tab) and log in by myself :)

And my little question:
is it anyway possible to hide your IP when using any mail client to hide what IP address was an e-mail sent from :?: [except using a proxy in your 'network' tab setting, of course ;)]
Thanx.

Simply put, it works as intended. Like the OP, I prefer using the browser to do my mails rather than on Thunderbird/Evolution. Of course you have to log-in but you can just set the browser to remember the login credentials on first attempt. The next time you click a mailto link, it directly goes to the compose message screen. No need to do what you said above.

As for your other question, I honestly do not know/am not sure. Maybe use a web proxy?

Sadly, I can't get those apps to work in Mint 11. Gnome Gmail and Desktop Webmail don't work at all.

Any advice?

+Forkjulle: have you read the rest of the page ? The comments? Haven't right :)
User Andrew placed there a link to a .deb. I suppose it should be that installation deb. Simply download it and run/install.

I installed Gnome Gmail from the repositories, and it did nothing at all.

Ugh. The bane of Mint 11. It should work, at least for Desktop Webmail since that's what I used. Then again, I'm on Mint 9. Shrugs.

It doesn't. I tried it.

After installation, clicking on it sends you to a web page that says: Bad Request Error 400

I got that error message too, BUT it's just a side effect because it's being configured for the first time. Click this link, then click the Send Mail link on the right pane to test it. It should work sans the error this time.

Doesn't work at all in Mint 11. It simply opens Thunderbird's compose window.

You DID set the Mail Reader in Preferred Applications accordingly, didn't you?

No. Because the option isn't listed. ONLY Thunderbird is listed.

After installing that .deb file you have to sent your setting as for 'Preferred Applications' where you chose the app 'Desktop webmail'.
After this step, when clicking on a mailto link, preferred web browser opens with Compose page (if u r already logged in Gmail) but - the e-mail address is not in the 'To:' box in the gmail :(
So I have to copy the email address anyway.
Therefore I have to say - IMHO, it's useless app ;)

I am just now on Debian ;) but it shouldn't matter if you will follow above instructions.
