Compiz Settings.

Postby animator84 on Sun Sep 25, 2011 3:07 am

Hi I just installed Linux Mint as I am really impressed by the desktop and customisability.

I saw in many videos of the ability to switch desktops with desktop wall and "expo" and "desktop cube" and the really cool animation transitions for the windows which i assumed belong to the CompizConfig settings manager. But It seems that nothing I click seems to do anything. When I enable expo
and edited the expo key, pressing it doesn't do anything.

When I enabled Desktop wall, There are a lot of options to edit. But no instructions on how to activate it. Like.... the basic of what do i press to show Desktop wall? I know switching desktops , "Ctrl+Alt+left/right" But I want to know what buttons activate expo, desktop cube , desktop wall and how to make all the animation in Compiz setting actually work.

I am really noob and hope somebody can tell me these basics . Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Some have had enough trouble to go back to a previous version. It works fine for me in LM11-64bit Gnome, but it took a little playing around to get all that stuff going.

There is a compiz extras package to be installed via the package manager. Not the exact name, but typing that in the search field will pull it up. Also compiz fusion icon helps when bad stuff happens.

Then in the settings manager, enable animation and and animation add-on. The attached CCSM screenshot shows what works here:

Hi conslie, thanks for replying, I see that your Compiz settings screenshot and mine are quite different in that you have more options like "Animation add on"
You said that I should go to the package manager to find the packages . Please correct me if I'm wrong but I went to the package manager and searched for compiz and

and sure enough there are quite a few compiz packages that are unmarked. (so it means they are not currently installed right?) So I should test read them and find which package to install? Am I still on the right track?

Btw, I have another problem now, err... I can't click and drag my windows anywhere it seems. And the only way to solve it is to Open Compiz fusion Icon and change the window manager to Metacity. Well... I don't really know what Metacity is, but after that, all my Expo and cool transitions kinda disappear. Sorry to bother you. =/ But I really want to know what's happening and want to transit to linux permanently. Thank you !!!!

Sorry for the delay. Yes, that is the package.

If you right-click and select properties, you can get a lot more info about the packages you are curious about. Things will make more sense as you get a better feel for how Linux works.

One thing is that windows can be drawn and handled by different engines. Metacity is part of the basic Gnome desktop, Compiz is an alternative with the fancy effects.

As for getting windows to move and such under Compiz, check under Window Management and be sure that Move, Put, Resize and such are checked. Changes there take effect immediately, so you can see whether they do what you intend without closing the Settings Manager. (Be sure that using Compiz is selected via the Fusion Icon control.)

Play around. Assuming you have important files stored on another partition or drive, the worst that will happen will be a 20-30 minutes to reinstall, and even doing that a few times can be instructive.

Have fun!
