If you right-click and select properties, you can get a lot more info about the packages you are curious about. Things will make more sense as you get a better feel for how Linux works.
One thing is that windows can be drawn and handled by different engines. Metacity is part of the basic Gnome desktop, Compiz is an alternative with the fancy effects.
As for getting windows to move and such under Compiz, check under Window Management and be sure that Move, Put, Resize and such are checked. Changes there take effect immediately, so you can see whether they do what you intend without closing the Settings Manager. (Be sure that using Compiz is selected via the Fusion Icon control.)
Play around. Assuming you have important files stored on another partition or drive, the worst that will happen will be a 20-30 minutes to reinstall, and even doing that a few times can be instructive.
