Re: LMDE (Tracking SID, or other non-standard) BREAKAGES!

Postby Brian49 on Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:30 am

I think I've fixed the problem, although I still don't know what the problem was! I did this:

- used dpkg to downgrade all the installed xserver-related packages to the versions designated for Debian Stable;

- ran the normal upgrade routine.

This has resulted in all the packages being upgraded to the versions designated for Debian Unstable, without any packages being removed. Go figure.

Many thanks for your efforts to help.

A new issue: take care with these three packages which have just come through as upgrades: gnome-session, gnome-session-bin and gnome-session-common. Weird things may happen on your desktop the next time you load it! This appears to have nothing to do with Gnome 3; they are just point upgrades to Gnome 2 packages.

Ah well, looks like another glitch peculiar to my system then. I might have to do a fresh install from the ISO one of these days, but my system is humming along very well apart from these minor and mysterious issues with a few package upgrades.

I let the upgrades to the two python packages go through. They didn't cause any problems, probably because I don't have any of the other packages installed which were listed for removal on your system. But I pinned the pulseaudio packages, because upgrading them would have involved installing a whole lot of other packages I don't currently have and don't need.

Wayne is that straight Debian SID Gnome (or LMDE SID Gnome)?

I am not getting anything removed through CLI DU

Code: Select all
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

The following packages have been kept back:

  gir1.2-clutter-1.0 libclutter-1.0-0 libopenal1 libpulse-mainloop-glib0
  libpulse0 libreoffice-base libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-calc
  libreoffice-core libreoffice-draw libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-gtk
  libreoffice-impress libreoffice-math libreoffice-writer mint-meta-codecs
  pulseaudio pulseaudio-esound-compat pulseaudio-module-gconf
  pulseaudio-module-x11 pulseaudio-module-zeroconf pulseaudio-utils python
  python-brlapi python-minimal python-uno vino

The following packages will be upgraded:

  debhelper libgnome-keyring0 libperl5.12 perl perl-base perl-modules
  rkhunter tomboy

8 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 27 not upgraded.
Need to get 4,761 kB/16.2 MB of archives.
After this operation, 9,658 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Y

But here is something very odd.
If I try to update through Synaptic right AFTER the DU that I did above.
It will hold nothing back, and remove good stuff?
(PS - about Tomboy. I have it pinned in Synaptic, but CLI DU upgrades it anyway? Then Synaptic upgrade wants to downgrade it... )

I get.

Screenshot.png

continued
Screenshot-1.png

Why would a full DU from CLI
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Yeild different result than Synaptic?
That never happened before.? :?

[SOLVED] Slowdown with Xorg 1.11 and Nvidia Driver 285.05.09

install Nvidia Driver 285.05.09 from repo experimental and reboot
install Xorg 1.11 and reboot
you will now experience a slowdown (some "Trapezoid" stuff), but graphics are ok

open Synaptic Package Manager
add this repository:
deb http://frickelplatz.de/debian/ sid main contrib non-free

open this url in a browser:
http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/l ... 08151E2489
and save the key (only the key!) in a file like frickelplatz.gpg
import the key-file in the Authentication tab

reload the repositories

Upgrade:
xserver-xorg-core:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)
xserver-common:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)
xvfb:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)
xnest:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)

dont know if you need all 4 packages, but i have done it.
reboot

you should see now a fast accelerated Desktop
with Xorg 1.11 and Nvidia Driver 285.05.09 !!

disable the frickelplatz repository.

Thanks to "towo" who uploaded the patched Xorg files

All instructions at your OWN RISK!

i am running "Linux Mint Debian x64 Xfce +Compiz +Emerald" using the unstable (SID) repository
and i am very very happy with it. :D

I found more on the Aptsosid forum

Start with posts of Oct 5.
towo replies there.

With a GTX480, you don't need this patched xserver, since your card is supporting accelerated trapazoids.

Now I see why I am not affected by this problem.
I was wondering why.
My graphics card supports "accelerated trapezoids" (GTX460), which appears a problem on some cards..
By pure chance, I just upgraded this card from a GT210 about 10 days ago.

I have the latest Xorg 1.11 and Nvidia Driver 285.05.09, all is fine.

EDIT:
Another way to add the "keys" if you want them. Is to download them directly from Synaptic after adding the Frickelplatz repo, and "refreshing".

P.S. "towo" IS Frickelplatz :)
