It isn't really causing me that many headaches Gene, it is just that I don't like having packages on hold all the time. I hope a solution is found to this before it is released into 'latest' though, because if it gets into that it is going to cause real wailing and gnashing of teeth :lol:

As for the new Nvidia driver I have already tested it and that doesn't solve the problem either, at least not the 'pre-release' version that I used.

Are there any time estimates when update pack 3 will be ready for us Nvidia users general consumption .

I am asking as one of my most important apps does not seem to work correctly in my squeeze set up.

More mesa/glx stuff in today's updates, mintupdate again wants to remove fglrx. Going to play the waiting game :)

@xircon: It's not a Mint specific issue. I've been holding back xorg updates on Debian for the past week owing to the threat of removal of fglrx. If I'm honest, I'm not expecting a fix on this any time soon, either.

No, realise that, been trying to use mintupdate where ever possible, all feed back helps.

i'm not usually pessimist (actually i have a very optimistic approach), but to be really honest i can't see how all this xorg1.11/nvidia/ATI mess will finish

I had another go with the latest 285.05.09 Nvidia driver, and it is absolutely fine, as long as it is matched with the 1.10.4 xorg driver. (In fact I am using it now). But as soon as you introduce the 1.11 xorg to it then it all goes wrong. I noticed the lag with gthumb as usual, but then I thought well, perhaps this is a problem with gthumb, not xorg, because most other programs don't cause the excessive cpu usage that gthumb does. So then I started to look through other programs that might confirm things one way or another. GeneC's post from the last page gave me a good clue, in that he said that glxgears worked for him, well I can only tell you it doesn't work for me. It just gave some spurious error message that Bletchley Park would never decode, and refused to run. It was the same with nvidia-settings. It launched OK, but as soon as you tried to access any of its settings, it just shut down. The other thing I noticed was that inxi said that glx information was 'unavailable' or words to that effect. I deleted xorg 1.11, replaced it with 1.10.4 (which incidentally is probably in your apt cache file if you want to carry out similar experiments) and everything is back to normal again even with the latest Nvidia driver. I freely admit I don't know that much about it, but I think this is a problem with the xorg driver not with Nvidia.

If this serious problem showed up in "testing " then why on earth was the update shoved through to the"latest" repo. Please Clem and co, hold back all dodgy updates until they don't break something.

This problem occurs in testing and testing only, it is also post update pack 3. Running latest or incoming you will not be affected by this error.

That's funny as the other day I ran update pack 3 from my "Latest" pointing repositories and that update broke my system. :x

Must have imagined that one then. :roll:

Sorry zerozero, but i had asumed that this was the correct thread with regard to lmde breakages .

Please forgive my ignorance. I am but a humble user. I have just found it a little frustrating that both update packs 1 and 3 have broken my system.

Also viking777, no offence meant by previous post.

I have had this application called "childsplay" for long. However the last few updates/upgrades seem to have broken something and the application doesn't start. Reinstalling the application and dependencies doesn't help.
I am on Testing repos, hence posting here. No additional repos are added and no non standard changes have been made to my AMD64 system.
I tried thru the command line and this is what i get:

Code: Select all
narendra@diwate ~ $ childsplay
2011-10-06 22:10:01,678 - schoolsplay.SPDataManager - ERROR - No sqlalchemy package found
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/childsplay_sp/SPDataManager.py", line 41, in <module>
    import sqlalchemy.exceptions as sqlae

    import SPDataManager as SPDataManager
  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/childsplay_sp/SPDataManager.py", line 45, in <module>
    raise Exception

I do have the python-sqlalchemy package installed.
Now , how do i resolve this?

Thanks for reading this and Any help will be gratefully received.
