Thanks to GeneC's link in an earlier post I finally got a handle on what it causing this Nvidia/xorg problem. It seems that the new xorg
caused a performance regression because previously, miTrapezoids
would render its mask image into a scratch pixmap and then perform the
final composite using a possibly-accelerated RENDER Composite call.
Now, fbTrapezoids does the final composite in software,
Now why couldn't you have told me that before?

Really, what is the matter with you dummies :shock: :? :lol:

I just hate it when my miTrapezoids :?: :shock: don't render correctly.... :lol: :lol:

I have no idea what any of that means. :?

After doing a safe-upgrade over the weekend, which didn't offer to upgrade those x files, and rebooting, now my GDM comes up huge, the fonts are large it seems. The screen also moves as I move the mouse. I have a usb mouse and keyboard, so when I try to sign in, I can't type anything. I can choose the user and when I try to type in the password, nothing appears in the password box. I have an ATI video card but use the default driver that's included with LMDE.

I dual boot LMDE with another distro, so after doing the safe-update, I booted into the second distro until today is when I see this issue.

Any ideas what could be going on?

[SOLVED] Slowdown with Xorg 1.11 and Nvidia Driver 285.05.09

install Nvidia Driver 285.05.09 from repo experimental and reboot
install Xorg 1.11 and reboot
you will now experience a slowdown (some "Trapezoid" stuff), but graphics are ok

open Synaptic Package Manager
add this repository:
deb http://frickelplatz.de/debian/ sid main contrib non-free

open this url in a browser:
http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/l ... 08151E2489
and save the key (only the key!) in a file like frickelplatz.gpg
import the key-file in the Authentication tab

reload the repositories

Upgrade:
xserver-xorg-core:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)
xserver-common:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)
xvfb:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)
xnest:amd64 (1.11.1-1, 1.11.1-1+c0.frickel.1)

dont know if you need all 4 packages, but i have done it.
reboot

you should see now a fast accelerated Desktop
with Xorg 1.11 and Nvidia Driver 285.05.09 !! :lol: :lol: :lol:

disable the frickelplatz repository.

Thanks to "towo" who uploaded the patched Xorg files
I tried it on my 32bit system today and it's working :) what i had to do before installing the Xorg 1.11 stuff was disable the
Mint repos and after sharpen the frickelplatz repos disable the testing repos. Otherwise nvidia-glx 285 would have gone over
the Jordan again. Instead of xnest i choosed xserver-xephyr. After sharpend the frickelplatz repo the keyring was available
in synaptic.

Thanks to gcp, towo and GeneC who posted this possibility in this thread :D

does "apt-get dist-upgrade" amount to a "full-upgrade"? because that's what i did and ended up like the rest of these poor souls. the pkgs that were "held back" were everything with "xserver-..." as a prefix (and that was perhaps two dozen packages)

haven't tried the frickelplatz maneuver yet, but will try it soon. thank you all for looking into this rather annoying issue. mine was a nearly pristine install when it hit this event.

"apt-get dist-upgrade" does constitute a full upgrade provided you "apt-get update" first. The frickleplatz maneuver is meant for nvidia cards. So don't bother if you aren't using nvidia.

I normally do a full-upgrade but at times it wants to install or remove some packages, in this case the xserver group of packages. If I was to choose to install them, it would remove a few other packages, so I decided to do the safe-upgrade until the other packages would be solved. I believe it removes certain packages because of dependency issues.

I guess I can try to boot into expert mode and run the full-upgrade from cli to see what happens.

Are you saying instead of doing the safe-upgrade, one should just wait for everything to be fully upgraded when doing the full-upgrade?

Thnx.

ghostdawg,
i've been looking at your posts and can't find easy answers;

1- i've always learned (and used in all the rolling distros i been using) that full-upgrade (or similar) is the only way to go; if the update looks fishy or is broken, wait and update other day;

2- removals and additions are part of testing, you have to accept this (of course with the exception when those removals will broke clearly your system);

3- because of the above, hold a full-update for a long periods of time because some pkgs are to be removed, will only make things worst, problems will cumulate and some of the breakages easily solved in an early stage would be impossible later;
3-a) in testing the definition of long periods of time is very short (testing moves so fast that one week sometimes is to much);

now, your situation: you have these unmet deps
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
python-beagle: Depends: python (< 2.7) but 2.7.2-8 is to be installed.
python-aptdaemon: Depends: python (< 2.7) but 2.7.2-8 is to be installed.
xserver-xorg-core: Depends: libpixman-1-0 (>= 0.21.6) but 0.20.2-0ubuntu1 is installed.
libpulse-browse0: Depends: libpulse0 (= 0.9.23-1) but 1.0-4 is to be installed.
mint-meta-codecs: Conflicts: gstreamer0.10-plugins-really-bad but 0.10.22-0.2 is installed.
try the following (but use it at your own risk, and in doubt copy-paste the output here)
- disable for moments the mint repo, do a update and full-upgrade
- have to warn you that with this move you will loose the patched libcairo2 (responsible for the fonts, after that they may not look so great - i personally see no big difference)

Thanks for that post zerozero. I had the problem of held back xorg updates for a couple of weeks. I disabled the Mint repo temporarily, did a full upgrade, and re-enabled the Mint repo. All the upgrades were applied, and I also notice no difference in my font appearance.
