Linux Mint 10 Juila Update Manager

Postby questined on Mon Oct 10, 2011 1:45 pm

Hi all! I have linux mint 10 Juila on my netbook and It's been acting up lately with the updates... Everytime I update It keeps saying "Could not download all repository indexes" . I'm including screenshots showing what it keeps telling me everytime I start Update Manager. I'm kind of a beginner at this but when it says 404 not found I think that means it can't access the internet or something however I'm connected to my wireless network and am currently have 4 bars (80%). I'm not sure what to do and I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thank you for your help!! :)

I'd guess number 1 is because you are using the wireless, and since it is a firmware upgrade, probably needs a cold re-boot.
Number 3, can you see DISTRO , that is wrong. You will need to open the Software Sources program, find those repositories, edit out the DISTRO, and replace it with Maverick. Then save, close, and reload/reopen the Update Manager.

good luck.

How do I do a cold re-boot? Is that just a normal re-boot? And I changed it from DISTRO to Maverick and it's still giving me the same problem. I'm posting a screenshot.

Yes, cold boot = shutting it off completely, wait a minute or two, then a restart.

There is NO Maverick folder at that address anywhere? I browsed around and found the downloadable deb files for Maverick in another folder. Download the one for your architecture (32 or 64), right-click -> install with Gdebi. That should install it for you, and take care of any dependencies.

Ok I see. So far I don't think I see it. Where would the maverick folder be located? Also for the link you sent me, how would I know which to download according to my computer? I know I'm 32 bit but which deb do I download? I tried downloading the debs that were NOT 64 bit and trying running them with the package installer. I'm posting a screenshot of it. It said an older version of kmess is available in software channel. Not sure what to do. Thanx for your help btw.

The older version that it detects is probably available for install through the Package Manager or Software Manager programs (and most likely tested for Julia). The one you are going to install is newer. Which version do you want? It's your choice.
ps; the 32 bit deb file that you want should have i386 and maverick in the name.

Ah ok. The thing is, I already have kmess but it crashes everytime I start it up. Right I got that one with the name maverick in it however it displays that message. I guess I would want the newer version... it's probably the more stable one than the one I've already got. I got kmess from the software manager and reinstalled it many times however the problem was not fixed. I'd rather have the newer one. Kmess still crashes despite installing the package. Do I uninstall then reinstall using the new package?

Yes, un-install first, and I'd like to suggest you choose the Completely Remove option when you mark it in the Package Manager.

I just noticed in your screenshot that you are running the Gnome desktop, but you are trying to install a program specifically made for the KDE desktop ? any special reason ? have you tried the aMSN program ? it's available for you to install and try out in the Package Manager if you are interested.

So would just uninstalling using in the terminal: [sudo apt-get remove kmess] work? Or would that not be a complete removal? Also I'm not a big fan of amsn its annoying to use... I preferred kmess when I was using it. It's much easier to use. I have amsn but its not that great to use...
