Don't mind the ads, but I sure hate them embedded (SOLVED)

Postby richyrich on Mon Oct 10, 2011 11:29 pm

Don't mind the ads, but I sure hate them embedded into the text of our posts and replies. (see)

I predict it's going to cause mis-communication, confusion and possible errors.

+1

I just logged on for the first time in a couple of days and thought for a second that I had been infected by something. These are, to my way of thinking, the single worst kind of webvertising around. You just move your mouse around a page to click on something and suddenly one of these damned ads pops up - worse is the fact that you have to click back on the main page to get it to go away. If it just popped up and then disappeared as soon as you moved away then it wouldn't be quite so bad. I have intentionally left *.linuxmint.com as an exception in my AdBlockPlus settings to help with the revenue, but I may well have to change that if it helps to get rid of these things.

Please, Clem et al - reconsider this decision. The O/S is great, but what makes it so good is the community we have here - it would be a shame to see that suffer.

Just logged in, did a "View your posts", and saw these embedded linked adds in my posts. If someone else wrote those posts I'd have reported them as spam. Some of the links are disruptive focusing on words like "copy" implying a link to description of how to do a copy. This is not a good thing.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

I do mind. I'm sorry if that's bad for Mint, but i do not accept adds. Period.

I have really mixed feelings. Clem needs money to keep things running, and of course I want him to keep things running.

Perhaps if more of us donated he wouldn't need to do this, but I suspect we've all donated as much as we feel we can at the moment.

No easy answers come to mind. My personal decision is to grin and bear it, as Mint is worth it to me.

I can't help but wonder how much revenue silly and intrusive ads like this generate, though. The payment is presumably for click-throughs, and I can't imagine anyone clicking on these things. I might click on one of his ads if it were clear where it led, but these embedded things are just a crapshoot.

This wasn't intentional. Things back to normal.

I don't. Get rid of 'em.

But I don't think I'm seeing them. I'm using Adblock in Chromium, does that block 'em?

As I said, these embedded ads were not intentional - problem has been resolved. They are no longer on the forum.

But yes, adblock would have blocked them.

My understanding is that Chromium/Chrome doesn't have the APIs needed to do true ad-blocking yet. I think that means that you still have to download the ad, but then the ad-block extension merely hides it using CSS. I hope Chrome catches up soon and allows true blocking of ads.

But I'm not sure that's the answer for this forum. If Clem is making needed money with the ads, I'd rather not block them here. Other places, sure.. but not if it takes money out of Clem's pocket.
