For those who have loopback issues and experience the "no sound issue", try the following:

(loopback issues: no cables between your pci tv card and your sound card)

1. turn on tvtime
2. open a terminal and enter the following:

pactl load-module module-loopback


It should work immediatly, at least it did for me.

please run lsusb ( within a terminal ) with the stick connected and see if your stick is a least found.
If it is, then you can use the very first post in this thread to get it working or at least know which name to google for ( mostly based on chip sets and not brand names ).

I do wonder why you using mint 7 Will limit your options on this kind of hardware!

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1250, and when I had Mint 10.04, the functionality was "sketchy". I was using MythTV and when I would connect the antenna, it would receive a signal for a few seconds then the comp would log out completely out of my account! This is what I get for lsmod | grep dvb:

Any help is greatly appreciated! BTW, I'm running 4GB RAM, 8400 Core 2 Duo, Mint 11.04 64bit. (I'd love to really use the remote that came with the card, too!)

I think there is some issue with the compatibility, I too had a similar problem a little while back but getting the card changed did work out for me. Checking the list of the compatible cards is the key.

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 which I bought from Newegg a few years ago:

Over the years, I've not had much success making it work. I tried OpenSuse, and Ubuntu. However, yesterday, I got it to work in Linux Mint 13! It was actually very easy.
I used some of the info in this http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-HVR-2200

Here's all I had to do:
1) physically install the card. The following showed up in dmesg:

Once that was done, I installed kaffeine, had it 'scan' for channels, and I was watching TV.
The only thing left is getting ALL the channels. For some reason, it only picked up about half of my digital TV channels.

Still working on that.
I hope this helps anyone else trying to get DTV cards to work!

I'm using Kaffeine, which seems pretty cool. It has nice recording, and scheduled recording options. Somehow, it picks up the schedules of what is on each channel for the upcoming day.

I tried installing configuring MythTV, but there were countless configuration questions/options. Questions/options like:

Phase Inversion Frequency
Photon Inertial Dampener Seed
Transcode Multiplier
Video Differential Offset
Digital Frequency Dampener Value
Reverse Allignment Tertiary Gain Setting
Primary Video Colorburst Angle

Ok, I made that up. But similar questions and I had no clue.

Kaffeine just worked.

All reported tv tuners that work on linux are on linuxtv.org . Also info on how and what is needed to get them to work if anything. For example the wintv 1600 model is supported without doing anything. Just fire up kaffeine and get going.

Has anyone had success with teh Hauppauge HVR-1800 card? By all accounts, it should be supported in Mint 14, since the drivers were added way back in kernel 2.6. I can only find the ATSC tuner in any application. The NTSC/analog cable tuner seems to not show up. I tried myth tv, kaffeine, and tv headend.

Any ideas?

As a newby I am not totally certin about this. But in my blined atempts to get my tv up and running i cam across this.

In the terminal type lspci -v -nn -mm
lspci tells it to list the devices in the pci slot of the computer.
If you using a ubs stick try lsubs -v -nn -mm.
-v tells it to be verbose
-nn tells it that you want bothe the name and number of the device
-mm tells it to show the codes it uses.

Running that gave me

In Ubuntu/Debian its supposed to be:

/etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

Unfortunately it didn't work for me in LMDE or LM13, I started a thread on it when LMDE was "new". My solution was a line in root's crontab:

@reboot /sbin/rmmod saa7134_alsa saa7134 && /sbin/modprobe saa7134 card=42,42

I need two capture cards and don't care about the tuners as NTSC is dead in the US unless you want to hook up an old game or VCR via RF.

I'd like to know of options instead of options.conf is the solution, not that I'm going to change my systems.

I use an wintv 1600 pci and an pinnacle 800i. The wintv one works with out doing anything. Just fire up me-tv or kaffeine. On the Pinnacle 800i i go to linuxtv.org amd find the 800i under the pci devices and download the driver and then install it. Then it is same as the wintv fire up me-tv or kaffeine . I always use the listing on linuxtv.org because those are the ones I have success with. I also have a northwood ( compusa ) hd tuner card and followed the instructions on the bottom of the page and it worked also. Just it used to much cpu so replaced it with the wintv 1600. Which is a great card/
