Todays kernel update broke my virtualbox. Seems like the kernel are missing some drivers for it. Just a heads up.

Best regards Jens.

Kernel update sometime does not trigger kernel header installation, as such virtualbox might fail.

Try install the kernel header,
use terminal and type uname -r to view your linux-kernel
just use synaptic search the corresponding headers, then install them.
after installation, reboot to your new kernel, virtualbox should work

have fun.

These five xserver packages are being held back again, on both apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade:

xserver-xorg, xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-input-evdev, xserver-xorg-video-radeon and xserver-xorg-video-vesa

According to Synaptic, I could install them, but I would have to install half a ton of NVIDIA-related packages at the same time, which I don't need as my card is ATI.

Full DU today.

libenchant1c2a is held back or it will remove "Thunderbird".

Something broke "alacarte" (Menu Editor) in the last week or so.
No longer able to edit menu.
Its still the same version of alacarte 0.13.2-2 thats in testing, so its some other package upgrade that broke it.

All in all things are good in SID land. :)

EDIT:
Let libenchant1c2a remove Thunderbird, then you can just re-install it.

I got frisky the other day and decided to try sid on my other PC. Looks like it was just in time for gnome shell.

Actually, it's not bad... but it is a bit different. I'd never have figured that this old ATI card [Radeon 9600] would even run gnome shell, but it works so far. Both shell and fallback mode are going to take some getting used to, though.

Any one have any ideas how I can get the Shell?

and only the latest kernel 3.0.0-2 boots to new gnome shell
may be my ati card is fast enough, it does not look bad compared to what I read. anyway, time to play.

another nice , pleasant surprise: very nice fonts rendering

Well, a couple new updates this morning.

Code: Select all
Commit Log for Sat Oct 15 06:07:18 2011

Upgraded the following packages:
alsa-utils (1.0.24.2-3) to 1.0.24.2-4
gucharmap (1:3.0.1-1) to 1:3.2.0-1
initscripts (2.88dsf-13.11) to 2.88dsf-13.12
libasound2-plugins (1.0.24-2+b1) to 1.0.24-3
libgucharmap-2-90-7 (1:3.0.1-1) to 1:3.2.0-1
libregexp-assemble-perl (0.35-1) to 0.35-2
sysv-rc (2.88dsf-13.11) to 2.88dsf-13.12
sysvinit (2.88dsf-13.11) to 2.88dsf-13.12
sysvinit-utils (2.88dsf-13.11) to 2.88dsf-13.12
wpasupplicant (0.7.3-4) to 0.7.3-5

but still cant boot into "gnome shell", I get booted back to log-in screen, and have to choose "fallback mode".
Everything works fine there, but its kind of bland, and no customization of panels(one top and bottom). Bottom one is a pain as it interferes with AWN.
Tried disabling Emerald and Compiz, but that's no help.

Postby wayne128 on Sat Oct 15, 2011 6:49 pm

I noticed one issue:
USB drive , when plugged in , does not automatically get detected.
nautilus, fdisk, gparted all cannot detect USB drive.

If switched to fallback mode, all is well.

Today try D.U. , some new package came in. fully DU.
USB drive work now.
May be because of gnome-control-center.

e# apt-cache policy gnome-control-center
gnome-control-center:
Installed: 1:3.0.2-3
Candidate: 1:3.0.2-3

Version table:

500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages

Notice another issue, by reading from aptosid forum,
iceweasel 7.0.1-3 segfaults on i386
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=645371

My iceweasel 7.0.1-3 for amd-64 is doing OK without the said issue.
Today DU has 7.0.1-4 that resolved segfaults issue

Re: LMDE (Tracking SID, or other non-standard) BREAKAGES!

Postby gcp on Sun Oct 16, 2011 4:54 am

WARNING: have fun with slow desktop again after upgrading to xorg-server (2:1.11.1.901-1)

If you use the xorg packages from the frickelplatz repository and upgrade to xorg 1.11.1.901-1,
you will have the slow desktop again.

The problem is NOT solved!

Hold the frickelplatz packages and wait for better days...

Fix possible with next Nvidia-Drivers:

gcp - do you have any issues at all with the frickelplatz packages?

I ask as I have issues playing extremetuxracer and torcs (ie they don't play) when I used the frickelplatz packages, but no issue with those games when using latest xorg.
On the other hand without the frickelplatz packages I do get the slow desktop with some apps and browsing some sites.

i installed extremetuxracer + torcs and can play it with no issues.
i tried the other installed games (Alien Arena, Nexuiz, OpenArena, Sauerbraten, Tremulous, Warsow)
and they are working fine.

My Nvidia-Card is a 9600 GT.
i am using the liquorix kernel (http://liquorix.net/).

If i try to start "NVIDIA X Server Settings" my computer locks up completely. I have to press the Reset-Button.
This does not happen with the original Xorg files.

Just a note about xorg/nvidia. This is a big problem for most folks with Nvidia cards, but not all.
If your Nvidia card supports "trapezoidal acceleration" :?: , you dont have this problem.
I am not real clear on what this all is, but this problem doesnt effect my card (GTX460).
Everthing is fine with me.
