Mint 11 Katya Screen Blue Tint Not Solved but Finished

Hello again.

I've just installed Mint 11 Katya on two of the schools old HP compaq laptops. One of them is working a treat but the other has this rather flushed, pixelated appearance, like the green of the Mint is washed out . It works fine buit just looks weird.

Any suggestions as to a possible cure. Screen resolution? If so guide me through how to cure it.

First you will have to determine if the resolution is indeed wrong. Go to Menu -> Control Center -> Monitors. See if the maximum allowable resolution is already chosen in the Resolution box. If so, next check the model of the laptop and look online (google box) what the maximum screen resolution for that laptop is. Perhaps Linux Mint is detecting it wrong.

If the maximum screen resolution is detected wrong:

• If you have an AMD (formerly ATI) or NVidia graphics card in the laptop, next step might be to go to Menu -> Control Center -> Additional Drivers and see if you can install the proprietary drivers for the card instead of the default open-source ones. This may work better (it may in fact also not, YMMV).
• Another option, if you have an Intel or AMD (formerly ATI) graphics card, is to use the tool xrandr to force a screen resolution. Short guide is here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=76085#p444558

If the maximum screen resolution is detected correctly, and also set correctly, then something else is wrong...

Thanks for the advice but the screen is still pixelated with a kind of blue washout to it. When I first installed Katya it was fine then a couple of days later this occurred.

Please help if you can. I even re-installed Katya last night to see if that would rectify it.

Well, the nx6110 PY499ET model has a 1024x768 display and that is also your current resolution. So the washout is not being caused by difference in resolution settings. To check that this is not some setting, I'd boot the laptop from the Linux Mint Live CD/DVD again and see if the problem persists. It might be easrly sign of hardware failure in that case.

Jeepers!! Now I'm looking at the print screen on a different workstation it looks fine! Could it be that the laptop screen is on the way out. It's only four years old.

OK, cured it. Took it apart wiggles wires and connections. Hit it a bit, put it back together. Now it works!!

Would you believe it! It's done it again. Perhaps I need to clean the contacts in the screen connection or perhaps it is goosed.

OK gang I've cleaned the contacts and wiggled just about everything. I've changed the boot to a higher resolution and no change. Still got this blue blurry screen.

I desperately need your help to solve this one. Come on Linux brains, help a chap in need

Definately hardware, not linux. I'm running the laptop with a separate monitor for the moment.
