Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
zerozero, thanks for the concern. I have an integrated ATI radeon chip on my IBM T42 laptop.
Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
ATI is often even later in supporting new X servers or kernels than nVidia.

I tend to be selective on which upgrades to apply, and will do them in stages.
Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
YMMV of course, but that is not the best approach to deal with a rolling release, anyway, it's your system and you do with it what you wantposco wrote:I tend to be selective on which upgrades to apply, and will do them in stages.
Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
Took all the warnings on board, and moved to the Deb Testing repos.
Updated around 520 files, 480MB worth, and can say that all is well. xserver and linux-header files updated as well with no issues.
Only thing that I have noticed has changed is that the font is a bit clearer.

Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
Glad you came through it OK, see you on the "tracking testing thread" I still have 44 packages held
Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
I tried the „latest“, then the „incoming“ but both are so quiet
now I switched back to „debian“ and get 34 packs new, so happy
only a view are on hold:
my sources list I can play with :
my old Pentium - inxi say:
living with firefox 7.0.1, thunderbird 7.0.1, claws-mail 3.7.9, compiz with plugins, ext4 & xfs, tried btrfs - this killed my home after hard boot a lot work to recover, so no more btrfs

Hi tmh,
for me your sources.list looks a little bit sick. Please take a look at this with all main sources included to play with and
compare it with your's
The deb src's you can ignore, they are for source codes only

I use also 14 more, all working well.
LMDE is living on my PC since it came out only with some smaller problems.
So my repros should be healthy, but please correct me if you think there is a mistake.

Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
Hi timh,
here is what i would correct:
You have this sources enabled and with it you mix linuxmint.com incoming with debian testing sources:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
incoming testing is freezed since the end of August and the debian sources enabled can cause problems with
dependencies the longer incoming is freezed.
If you want fully working debian testing repos it should look like this:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
here is what i would correct:
Code: Select all
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
###deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/testing testing main contrib non-free !!!
(if inabled the double entry testing testing can't work. In the line over it you have incoming
testing and i think you want to have latest testing here)
## ersatz 3.10.11 duch mint resourcen
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
###deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
###deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/testing/security testing/updates main contrib non-free !!!
(the same here - /testing/security testing/ - should be /latest/security testing/ if i understand the logic of your list correctly)
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free
###deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia testing main non-free
###deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/testing/multimedia testing main non-free !!!
(here i think you want to have /latest/multimedia testing)

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
Thank you - now I switch fromGerd50 wrote:

So I stay with Debian testing to get faster my updates.I use always :
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Thank you & a nice weekend

I followed this instructions
Can you tell you what to do?
Thanks

Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
There aren't much updates to LMDE at the moment. Debian is in progress of switching to Gnome 3 and Mint won't ship a half-baked Gnome 3 desktop with Gnome 2 relics in an update pack. Update packs last much longer than a Debian package which can be replaced within a few days so Gnome 3 has to be working stable.

Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
hi ppsalama,
i saw from previous posts of yours that you were (until now) running LMDE pointing at latest and fully updated (i presume), with UP3 installed;
if that's the situation, at the moment, switch to incoming won't give you any new updates:
- incoming is in all similar to latest with the exception that arrives a few days earlier to test the quality and the possible breakages of the future UP.

Thank you very much, now I understand it

Re: We need more testers to the new incoming repo (how-to)
Hi Zz,
You've helped me resolve my nvidia problem (in this recent post) so I should return the favor. I'll gladly be one of your guinea pigs for the Incoming repo.
1) I have a designated partition to Incoming testing now.
2) Edited my sources to point to the incoming repo then grabbed the new mintupdate-debian.
I should be good to go ... as expected no changes as of today when I checked via the Update Manager.
Although I am familiar with Linux Mint and LMDE I consider myself a newbie so can give you feedback from this perspective.
Hope it's helpful.

UP4 is just around the corner and brings some interesting stuff (gnome-shell, cinnamon, mate)
it took awhile but it's going to be worthy

LMDE is for me the best Linux distro I've ever tried. The way LMDE is today it is superb: stable, productive, fast, elegant, clean GUI... what more a linux user could wish?
But for any means I ever never will try the Gnome hell.... If UP4 is just around the corner simply I will not apply.
Gnome project has take a direction that I do not want to follow, either. I am a desktop user, administering a modest 6 pcs home network.... and I do not need touchscreen techs or other things alike aiming the smart(?)phone world.
Cheers
