Curious Idea

Postby mthees on Fri Oct 21, 2011 5:33 pm

I had a curious Idea early today. I want to discuss it in open chat a bit see what you guys think.

I enjoy reading threads and often will have to log out and leave my laptop before I finish reading the entire thread. What if there was an option for your account where you could have a "reading QUE" and save threads that you are actively reading to your que. You could choose to make public what threads are in your que for a given period of time (1 week or month makes sense to me any longer and the list could become 100 items long easily and any shorter it would be in maybe the single digits. I think about 25 items in your que makes sense) So you would be able to see what other users are reading and communicate with people reading similar things as you. It could also be built into the thread via a list of people actively reading and following a certain thread.

This would allow for you to socialize and communicate with people who read similar threads as you.

So I hope I have made this idea clear however, I can't seem to find 10 minutes of silence to type it out coherently. I will read through it after posting again and clarify my intentions if need be.

I am very curious as to what other people on the forum think about this idea and how to go about having it executed.

Yes I could, that misses the point though. Bookmarks get tedious. As time progresses my bookmarks go crazy. I keep them organized but they still number in the hundreds to add bookmarks for things I can handle by another means is not ideal. I can't seem to see a way to subscribe to threads. Though that would be excellent if it's possible -- which I'm sure it is. I probably am just blind and don't see the subscribe button basically.

The idea I talked about though was more than just 'marking' articles and threads to read later it's just a better way of interacting with the community. Imagine being able to connect with people exploring the same parts of mint-- or any other linux distro-- having the ability to discuss what you are learning about and exploring.

What, subscribing to a topic? I don't think that's the case. When you subscribe to a topic, it will be tied into your account in the forum.

Cookies are NOT necessarily evil. Some Windows antivirus software give cookies a bad name by using highfalutin terminologies (e.g. "tracking cookies" and the like) meant to scare off unsuspecting and uninformed users into thinking that cookies steal your credit card numbers or whatever.

The original idea of saving your place is what I was referring to. I'm on too many forums as it is so I understand the subscription aspect. I know cookies aren't the ones that steal my ID, but the more cookies that are stored on my system, the more my system gets bogged down. And one of the reasons I converted was speed.....

I'm sorry but I totally disagree with this particular statement. Browser cookies are merely tiny text files that store site-specific information, like user preferences and state information. Nothing more. Cookies don't cause a system (or a browser for that matter) to bog down. More likely, it's bad user habits or misbehaving software that causes system slowdowns.

yea I guess I could still be under windosys, tricked into thinking the cookies were the problem and not the system and browser. I think my connection may not be the best at all times. I don't know at this point why I would experience lag surfing with FF in Mint. I have all plug-ins disabled except for noScript. So I was under the impression it would be lightening fast and nobody knows anything about me.... other than what they can get from IP since I don't proxy.

I am on board with this idea if its what I think your saying. Oddly enough I figured there must be a way to follow threads or have thread posts notifications sent or shown to you after login. I just thought I never looked for it . It would seem an important feature of a forum to be able to follow or track a thread since some go awhile between posts and we don't always return to them to check for new posts as time passes especially in open chat. I find myself PM'ing allot on older threads so I know the person knows I posted something if I feel its important or it require a response.

Hey,

I think this idea is very good.
I know a forum where a simliar idea is implemented (www.administrator.de German speaking :/). There you can connect with other users which are interesting to you and build a "user-network". Than every activity is exchanged in the entire "network" and you get suggestions for threads which could be interesting to you (cause your network users read it).
