Wireless USB adapter install - Billion BiPAC 3011N (SOLVED)

Postby jungle on Sun Oct 23, 2011 8:25 am

I am trying to install a Billion BiPAC 3011N USB wireless adapter. It came with a Linux driver (rtl8192su). My operating system is Linux Mint 10 (64 bit) which is based on Ubuntu 10.10 (Linux 2.6.35).

I have checked the Realtek drivers and there is a new driver RTL8712 (suggested on one of the UBUNTU threads) which I think replaces (8188_8191-8192SU). It supports Linux kernel version from 2.6.18 ~ 2.6.33. I have both the RTL8192SU and the RTL8712 drivers on my desktop, but I do not know which to use. I can use the terminal in a basic fashion. I have very little idea what I am doing but I can input code given to me.

I am hoping that someone out there can help me install the best driver, install the adapter and get it up and running.

With you adapter plugged in, please open a terminal and enter
Code: Select all
lsusb
lsmod

Copy/paste the outputs back here.

Hi 'Remoulder' thanks for the suggestion. No response in the terminal to those commands lsusb or lsmod when the adapter is plugged in (either alone or as well as my TP-Link 54mps adapter). When i only have the old adapter plugged in I get he following response to those two commands.

I suspect that this device uses the rt73usb driver

and you can see it is already there;

and you also have the rt2500usb loading also: = CLASH

http://www.paulpepper.com/blog/2010/01/ ... on-ubuntu/

you should try blacklisting

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom.conf

then paste in

blacklist rt2500usb rt2x00usb rt2x00lib

if you re-boot; can you now see wireless network?

OK tried that but still can't see the Billion adapter. 'Connection information' shows the rt73usb driver which is working fine with the TP-Link 54mps adapter. In my Windows XP operating system partition I get 120 mps from the Billion adapter. Am still hoping to get it working with Linux Mint. Thanks for your help.

I have moved on from trying to install the Billion BiPAC 3011N wireless adapter with Linux Mint 10. My computer has two operating systems on separate hard drives Linux Mint 10 and Windows XP). My Linux system (Mint 10) has had no trouble finding and connecting to my Billion N7800 modem router via the ethernet (wire) connection. Interestingly as soon as this happened I lost the capacity to link in via the ethernet cable when using Windows XP on the same computer. The good news is that the Windows XP system had no trouble finding and working with the Billion BiPac 3011N wireless adapter (at 150 Mbps). As such I am no longer worrying about getting this wireless adapter to work with Linux. Not realy solved, just my work-around....

Please plug in the Billion adapter and then run lsusb again. In the lsusb output you posted only the Ralink RT73 adapter was visible. If that adapter used to work fine before you blacklisted things, please remove the blacklist again; rt2500usb and rt73usb can not conflict as they never drive the same devices. RT2500 drivers will never touch any RT2501 device.

I am afraid you really screwed up things by installing drivers manually. You presumably got an old version if it was compatible with kernels till 2.6.33. From 2.6.37 on r8712u is part of the kernel, replacing rtl8192su which was preinstalled on the kernels 2.6.31 to 2.6.36.

Instead of installing drivers manually (you can only screw up things as either rtl8192su or r8712u is already part any modern Linux kernel) I recommend to upgrade to a newer kernel: viewtopic.php?t=40185&f=42
You should really give the 3.2.5 kernel a try. Then you won't have to upgrade to more recent drivers anymore.

Hi Albert

Long time since I looked at my posts. Have reloaded Mint 10 (Julia) which is based on kernel 2.6.35-22 generic. Would like to have another go at getting the Billion BiPAC 3011N to work. Have checked and I can see that 'r8192s usb' is in the kernel (below). Can you help me to get my wireless adapter with rtl8192su to work with this kernel or will I need to upgrade to the current version of Linux Mint?

Regards

I see you're using the nvidia graphics driver. If you upgrade your kernel you also have to install a newer driver version. However you can install the drivers from a recent kernel version by using compat-wireless.

Mint 12 uses the Linux 3.0 kernel. If that kernel is working, you can download the 3.0 wifi drivers from compat-wireless: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download/stable/
Feel free to choose another version if you know that it's working. After downloading and unpacking it you can just run:
Code: Select all
make
sudo make install

As you're also having other wifi devices apart from this Billion one, I won't use ./scripts/driver-select to choose a driver as the other drivers that you didn't select will stop working.

OK despite the advice received which was very much appreciated I was not able to get this adapter to work with Julia (Linux Mint 10).
I have just upgraded the operating system to Maya (Linux Mint 13) because it will be maintained for the next five years and lo and behold my Billion BiPac 3011N wireless USB adapter works just fine.
