Crazy! I can see wireless network but can't connect

Post by 1212dl »

Hi,

Bizarre stuff...prepared this lappy for a colleague and made sure everything was working, especially wireless...
I have put his unability to connect to perhaps a wrong manip on a new environment, but... having tried I can't connect either anymore.
I can see and select the desired network in the network applet, it will ask for the password , which is saved in gnome keyring, but won't connect and ask for the password again and again. I have checked what could have been wrong with wireless, tried to use a usb wireless dongle (networks detected too in a seperate list in the netwrk applet, but same issue...stuck at password). I have delete the gnome keyring , just in case..., updated LMDE to the latest pack with newer versions of wireless and network applet, to no avail.

It just doen't seem to make sense that I can see the wireless networks but suddenly can't connect anymore. I have tried with a live-cd of Mint LXDE with the same issue, and as I mentioned with a usb wireless dongle with the same issue. All the other laptops are connecting fine to the network.

Just in case it helps, here are the outcomes I have for :

mint1 thebeat # iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth1 no wireless extensions.

eth2 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"BTBusinessHub-403"
Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: 34:EF:44:FD:11:D9
Bit Rate:0 kb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Sensitivity=8/0
Retry limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

I am lost!

This is right out of left field and probably something you're already on top of; I'm just making sure all bases are covered. Is it possible that someone else may have altered the password settings in the router?

no , router passwords haven't changed ... still using the same one on the lappy I am typing now.

I tried both LMDE and Mint LXDE on another laptop, with a wifi usb dongle and could reproduce the same issue with LMDE (wireless networks detected but impossible to connect as password doesn't seem to be accepted), but managed to connect with Mint LXDE.

I will try again with Mint LXDE on the initial laptop and see if I can get it to connect, and if so will swap distro...

Removing network-manager and installing wicd fixed the problem for me.

Thanks Detonate for the tip.
The whole thing is beyond me and drives me mad. I brought the laptop home to sort it out and I could connect straight away on my home wep protected network.
I nevertheless uninstalled netweok manager and installed wicd.
Back to office....I can see the networks with wicd, choose one, go in properties and enter my password... Whatever may be the settings that I choose either for a WPA or WEP connection (both are available from our BT wireless router in UK), I always get a 'wrong password' message , and no connections. I triple checked the passwords, even double checked it with the lappy I am connected on right now....it doesn't make sense at all. I don't know if it is because I don't use a passphrase at home, I tried all the possibilities anyway at work, and just can't connect....It's either something really stupid that I missed, or a magical spell!

Help!

I suspect network-manager did not completely uninstall.

Try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge network-manager
Then

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart
Then see what happens.

Thanks Detonate, I did that but it didn't sort it out. I restarted to no avail either. I tried Mint LXDE and got the same issue!... but I was connected this morning at home with the same lappy, and my other laptop and all others connect fine at the office with the same WPA or WEP network...mad!
Just burning Ubuntu 11.10 now ...waiting for a miracle!!!

I had a similar problem the other night. I had two other computers connected to the same wireless hub, but for some reason I couldn't connect this one, finally I rebooted the hub while trying to connect, It connected right on after rebooting the hub, now no problem with the connection. Not really sure as to why then/now and not before.

Run

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/wicd/wicd.log
in a terminal and copy and past the last 10 or 15 lines of the output in your reply.

Re: Crazy! I can see wireless network but can't connect

Post by 1212dl »

Thanks guys for your support... I think I cracked it...it is sooooooo stupid that I am embarrassed to confess...someone else came with a MAC to the office today and couldn't connect either...I couldn't connect either with a live-cd of lubuntu...and like the days before other laptops could connect...I restarted the router...everyone is connected, included this beautiful LMDE :D
God knows why only the usual laptops could connect every day but not this Mac and this LMDE laptop, but hey, I am not going to complain.

Thanks again

Restart the router :!: :!:

I should have suggested that first.

What happens is your system remembers the last DHCP address you had, and tries to connect using that same IP address, which your router thinks is already in use. Restarting the router of course clears the memory in the router and once again makes that DHCP address available.

So I'm curious if this is the issue that I'm having also--can't seem to get a few Dell Laptops working with the wireless. The wired works great--can't seem to get the wireless working to save my life--I'll try the turning off the router bit...but what about a wireless network that you can't turn off--ie, at a Starbucks or work? Seems like this should work easier than it is.

I should have suggested that first.

I don't have a wireless connection to play with at this time, but I think you can release the IP by entering in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo dhclient -r
sudo service networking restart
Try it and let me know if it works. If not, I have another way to do it that is a little more complicated.

Thank you! I was having this exact same issue. Sometimes for no apparent reason I cannot connect to the wireless in my house, but other times I can. Restarting the router fixes the problem but since I live with two others who share the same internet and router it's a hassle for them, especially if they are in the middle of streaming something.

I can confirm that:

Code: Select all

sudo dhclient -r
sudo service networking restart
Fixes the problem for me.

I realise after reading Detonate's explenation about the DHCP address that I've set my router to always assign my laptop the same local ip address. I don't want to have to change this so the above dhclient command is a winner :-D
