Flash videos causing FF freeze

Sometimes when viewing videos online in .flv or .swf format in Firefox, the tab or window becomes unresponsive, and I have to force quit. It's not usually a big deal, as Firefox restores the session when it crashes, but if I'm in the middle of a download this can be troublesome.

Is this a Firefox problem, or something to do with mplayer? Has anyone else had this same problem and, more importantly, does anyone know how to fix this?

Don't know of any fix, or for that matter why, but there are reports of this in the forum, so I have to deduce it's some kind of FF problem. You could look in the FF forum, if it's a general problem I think there should be something in there. And I'll have to study this more....

I do hope there's some solution to this problem.

EDIT: Googling around, this appears to be a Firefox problem that they haven't yet resolved. I'd switch to Opera, but those guys don't have a much-needed AdBlock extension yet. Saw a recommendation on one blog for a browser called Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com) that appears to be very much like FF, only it has an "anti-freeze" extension - but it only works with Windows.

Does anyone know any browsers with something AdBlock-ish that's Linux compatible?

I'm going to try Epiphany, which seems to be some kind of Firefox/Gnome hybrid, and report back.

OK so here's my browser report.

Well I've tried out Epiphany and my verdict is "Eh". It's a pretty boring browser. Not much to look at by way of eye candy, and it has damn few extensions. It's also annoying that history and cookies need to be cleared manually at the end of each session, instead of providing the option of clearing these things automatically (an option which is, oddly enough, available in the older Galeon). On the plus side, among the few extensions is AdBlock, and Flash videos seem to play just fine. Haven't had a freeze problem yet with Epiphany.

I also went back to my old friend Opera for a test run. Opera, while lacking AdBlock, does have this right-click function of "Block Content" which works virtually the same way. However, I do miss extensions - oh, sorry, "widgets" - such as Downloader Helper, Add to Search Bar and others. In Opera, you'll seldom find widgets of basic things of practical value, but you *can* get a widget of Chuck Norris facts and other such nonsense. It's the fastest browser I've ever had, but the extensions deficiency keeps me from making it my default.

Konqueror looks good - but I don't use KDE, so it's out of the question. EDIT: Wrong, I can use Konqueror with Gnome. So I'll give it a try and report back later. Having to download a bunch of other things in order to support the browser makes me wary, though.

This leaves us with Firefox. Yeah, I'll be keeping it as my default. Mainly because of the vast array of valuable extenstions. But also because Firefox 3 looks damn good. Apparently, the beta version is available for the brave souls who want to try it out. For some reason, I'm more adventurous with beta versions of OS's than browsers, so I'll wait for the stable version of 3. Until then, it looks like I'm sticking with Firefox as my default browser.

There is nothing stopping you using Konquereror on Gnome, has adblock, kget etc

BTW the latest flash update (Tues) on my Debian box is causing problems with Firefox and Konqueror.

This worked for me:

Thanks, Nick. I was under a different impression from looking at the Konqueror webpage, but I'm glad I can try it out in Gnome. I'll give it a shot now.
