need advice on new rig

Postby rek on Mon Oct 31, 2011 9:09 pm

building new rig to play some games-Intel corei7-16gig ram and need advice, not too knowledgeable. will install mint 12 64bit for the games but I will need a 32bit installation for a site I used 4-6 hrs a day.Questions- 1. can I install PAE enabled kernel to increase the available ram in the 32bit drive? 2. The motherboard [gigabyte] can be set to either 64bit or 32bit,will the 32bit run properly on the 64bit setting? The 32 bit drive is used mostly for VFO reception. Thanks for any advice-REK

Questions re the next release of mint are a little premature.

The Mint 12 reference is only incidental to my questions sorry for not being more precise.Googling has provided information that since Ubuntu 10.04 , the PAE enabled kernel is automatically present and can be installed to increase the available RAM up to 32gigs on 32 bit systems. For my cited use this would be ideal and I would not need 64 bit.Since Mint is based on Ubuntu. Is the PAE kernel available in Mint? Are there any users who have used it? I could set my motherboard to 32 bit rather than going in to the BIOS every time I switch from 32 bit to 64 bit. I plugged PAE into package manager and got nothing so I'm not sure if its available in Mint. I am a solid convert to Mint and would much prefer to stay with Mint rather than try Ubuntu again. I have found no references in Mint search for PAE and had to use Ubuntu search. Any advice on PAE is appreciated and not being very knowledgeable I rely on others. Thanks-REK

You can use a pae kernel in Mint just like you use in Ubuntu.

Can't you run that site in a VM or use 32bits libs in a 64bit system?
