As I'm not sure if I should report this also here -

I'm having crashes everytime Aegisub renders the softsubs in the video preview. Here are the details - viewtopic.php?f=199&t=83857

The crashes still occur using Aegisub 2.1.8 in the repo

Mint Menu has slowed down to the point it's taking more minute to load the desktop. That is just from the login screen.

Had to remove it from the panel and use Gnome Menu for now, it cut at least 45 seconds from the desktop population.

Maybe all the changes to Python that's been coming down the pipe?

@wyrdoak: Been facing this problem as well and was thinking of asking here.

Would you please post how ? Would be better if there was a way to deactivate (if there is no way to speed up) rather than completely remove.

And if there is any other way to reduce startup time from the login screen, please do post. Its taking way too long to get to a usable state. And I don't have too many things installed that need to load during startup.

In comparison the Ubuntu on the same machine is so snappy while booting/startup.

Thanks in advance.

OOps, OK, I know how to remove from the panel.

It would be good if its fixed to not take up so much time.

Morning

I had a complete crash and burn yesterday. Everything borked. Was going to do a fresh install anyway just got forced into it :). Now running a vanilla LMDE, with no FGLRX drivers as they have been temporarily pulled from the Testing repositories.

The machine booted fine, I booted, into Windows (first time in months) to use MS Publisher (there is no real replacement for Publisher in Linux, a real shame) and then booted back into LMDE, got a massive string of messages followed by a lot of "init: cannot execute "/usr/sbin/getty"" or similar. Googled got nothing so as I was going to reinstall I bit the bullet. Then the forum went down :( just when I needed you Guys the most :D

Do not know what caused it, but still have a bit to do. Machine is running hot (due to lack of FGLRX I hope).

So back to it!

I had that problem after most recent updates. I don't ever use fglrx as the Gallium open-source driver has worked perfectly with no overheating. Now after a couple of minutes the fan stops running completely and temps go through the roof. I've had to quit using LMDE until I can find a solution for the problem. :(

Where did you get the Gallium driver from? Which repo?

It is the one provided by the kernel if you don't use fglrx. If you are using ATI and have completely removed fglrx is should be used automatically. "inxi -xG" gives me this info:

xircon, is the system already fully updated? and still tracking latest or already testing? check your mesa v. with tdock's, you have 7.7.1 and he has 7.11 and a quick google search shows me that gallium3d requires 7.9 at least.
but i may completely off, i don't use ati

well those are the pkgs you need :lol: except for gnome-utils (that one is held back for long), i just don't get it why your system is holding xserver and deps back;
if you try to force install one of those, what will it scream back?

i saw it now, i'm on my way to work, won't be back until late this night :x
- forcing that one first, tells you what?
- changing the preferences file (so all the repos read the same priority) has any effect?

sorry i can't be of any more help atm

If necessary i do it in synaptic xircon. Mark the packages to force, then in the menu > Package > force version.

Oops, clicked on the apt-get as a link and un-installed xorg (If I reboot bye bye xorg) will try to fix and post back, if not I will reinstall :(

:Edit: Going for a reboot *gulp* see you after a re-install

:Edit: Blow me! it worked! (Kept the language polite there ;) ) - but still cannot see the Gallium drivers in synaptic.

Why don't you install a simple backup tool like qt4-fsarchiver xircon? It prevents you from reinstall after a hard crash.

http://qt4-fsarchiver.sourceforge.net/

It helped me a lot since running LMDE. Particularly if i'm in experimental mood

There is a Live CD available too:
