Hello there ...

Postby linuxnewb on Tue Nov 08, 2011 5:27 pm

Well for starters I wanted to say hello to everyone. I am a true newb at linux.

I have been messing around with it for a couple days. I see that its very interesting and quite visually pleasing.
I am trying to learn the system better and get better with terminal commands. I am considering buying a book to improve my linux skills. I recently installed an old version of Ubuntu the other night and I had no problems with it other then the fact that it wanted to update and it was taking hours. So I figured I would get the newest version of Ubuntu along with Fedora, I installed the new Ubuntu and ran into some hiccups, at first my video drivers were not being recognized then I finally got them to work, then after that it seemed as if the system was freezing up constantly. So I contacted my cousin who is pretty fluent with Linux and he suggested I use mint since I am a beginner.

although I am a beginner, I love to learn new things and I can usually pick up on things relatively fast. However a lot of this stuff seems to go over my head. I was doing some basic terminal commands last night, nothing too fancy just basic stuff like ls, cp, mkdir, etc..

so anyways I installed mint katya and Its wonderful however I am still having issues with my video drivers. I am not sure If I am posting in the wrong spot. I am not a huge forum person, I always use them to read info but never do I register.. so I am becoming a "member" so I can try to get involved with the community. Please dont flame me for any mistakes I may make on this post lol..

so if anyone has any info or suggestions for me. feel free to post them here. I am in search of basic command tutorials, and just basic knowledge of the OS as a whole.. I usually use YouTube for all my needs but the command tutorials are not so great (at least the ones I had encountered)

and if anyone has any advice about my drivers issue I would be extremely happy to hear it.
I am running a gtx260 .. and it is telling me the driver is active but not yet in use... so yeah..if anyone wants to help a beginner out, I would be ecstatic :)

First off, Welcome to the Linux Mint Forums. I'm not sure whether you should be in Introduce Yourself or Newbie Questions...you did introduce yourself. Have you checked in Control Center>Hardware Drivers? If you run that does it show an Nvidia driver available to install?

Edit: If that doesn't work, look through this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ce-822680/

Welcome to the Mint family forums

If you go to the main forums select hardware then use the search facility [using your hardware type as the query] you will most probably find the answer already there
