I got this alert during the upgrade, ignored it, and I seem to have rebooted into gnome-shell without problems.

apt-listbugs wrote:Grave bugs of metacity (1:2.30.1-3 -> 1:2.34.1-2) <unfixed>
#648052 - metacity segfaults after todays update to wheezy

Now I just have to *hurk* get used to the new interface.

edit: I seem to remember hearing that "don't power down when I shut the lid" is not an option in gnome3. I think I read it was a design decision. I remember thinking the correct engineering solution would be to drop a tree on that designer.

Can I ssh into this laptop with the lid closed?

edit: SOLVED: gnome-tweak-tool Shell --> laptop lid close action

thanks GregE!

A crazy thing happens on my machine after todays update. I saved libnautilus-gksu.so, put it to /usr/lib/nautilus/extensions-3.0/
If i want to open a file as administrator now, mplayer starts. Where i have to type in my password i get this:

The application 'mplayer' file:///tmp" lets you modifie essential parts of your system

even i removed all mplayer and conf files. I have a five days old backup, started two times from there. Both attempts with
the same result

If i open nautilus in the terminal i get this:

Help pls
After update I can't login. "oops an error occurred"
I saw some posts regarding Compiz. I do use it, is that the problem? If so pls advise how to stop it without being able to login.
LMDE was running beautifully.
Thanks

Another breakage with this update if you use gnucash - the scheduled transaction editor will now crash every time you try to update any entry (it was fine before the update). I updated to the latest version from Sid but that still crashes, so don't bother.

I found a bug about this on the Red Hat bugzilla https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=749541 which they say they have cured by updating gtk2.2, but I don't see the version number they are talking about anywhere on Debian (although I suppose they use different version numbers).

Hrm. I haven't done much of anything with gnome-shell -- just minor tweaks -- and now, it crashes as soon as I try to select any window (click to select, or alt-tab, or click a launcher: "Oops! Something has gone wrong, please log out and try again")

Lots of this in /var/log/messages:
Code: Select all
Nov  9 14:39:26 misterhost kernel: [  128.415917] gnome-shell[2135]: segfault at b ip b76f21ec sp bf8ae6d0 error 4 in libmutter.so.0.0.0[b7668000+bf000]

i386, by the way.

edit: SOLVED: I had a typo in the gconf-editor's desktop.gnome.shell.windows.button_layout value.
(It was missing the leading ":" character, and edits to the field aren't stored if you click without pressing enter first)

I found the problem.

(Along the way, I ended up reinstalling gnome-shell, installing xfce4, and removing xorg by accident, so it's been one of those days. But I'm back in business now.)

Well got my Xfce desktop working 8) Only thing is the workspace setting in compiz is frozen on one but I can still flip the screen and use the other side of the desktop as another workspace. Using the Xfce manager I can use all the workspaces I want, just no compiz effects.

The updates this morning changed to GDM3 now I can see what time it is without logging in. It gave me Gnome 3's top panel in the GDM. Got WINE working better than it did in Gnome after the updates had to force libwine-dev-bin to get it to install.

The biggest problem is apt-get keep wanting me to autoremove my Cairo Dock plugins, think that is because I will not use Nautilus as my file manager and the Cairo plugins think they need it to install. I just don't set up Nautilus and use it. Not after the Gnome 3 fiasco.

Oh! BTW, there was a problem using Rainlandar2 with Xfce I had to put the skin in my documents file in my home directory Xfce installs it as root so it can't update the task list, putting the skin in the home directory lets it update when needed, just tell Rainlander2 were it's at. Also had to change the XML code a little to get the clock to look right with the different font.

Install Gnome-Tweak-Tool and then you will be able to select various options for when you close the lid. The obvious one for you would be to just blank the screen.

The delete key does not work anymore in nautilus after the upgrade to gnome 3. Someone know how to make it work again ?

(incidentally Unity works well enough with my present graphics setup)

Hi, I sounds like your driver is broken. An Nvidia 8600GS should run the shell OK, but I think you will need Nvidia drivers rather than Nouveau.

Code: Select all
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module  290.03  Mon Oct 17 10:23:33 PDT 2011
GCC version:  gcc version 4.5.3 (Debian 4.5.3-9)

I don't think that is out of date is it?

And I certainly don't use Nouveau!

Thanks for the suggestion anyway, and I agree an Nvidia 8600GS should run the shell, but it doesn't. But as I said earlier it runs Unity 3d without bother.

Edit. I have got to say it doesn't really matter all that much to me, even if I got it going I would still use Fluxbox all the time anyway, it is just that I would like to satisfy my curiosity as to what it is all about.

There is a slightly newer version of Nvidia in experimental, I am using 290.06 with a G210 card and it works a treat. Maybe worth a try to get the latest driver as I think there are issues with Nvidia and xorg. Even going backward to a 275 might actually be better. Depends on how keen you are to solve a problem that does not matter to you.

Brilliant GregE! 290.06 worked, I now have Gnome 3 fully working, and actually, at first sight, I quite like the look of it. I will have to learn more about it now. I don't think it will ever replace Fluxbox but it satisfies my curiosity now that I can see it working.

Thanks for the tip.

Hi guys, im back to testing.
It was pretty boring on "latest UP3".
Now i got Gnome3 to play with, and some interesting faults to handle, like some holdback on Xorg.
After trying Fedora 16 on live CD i realized that Gnome3 isnt that bad that everyone is saying.

Will we be seeing a new spin of LMDE Gnome edition after Gnome 3 is finally settled and stable? I know its just 2 months since one came out, but this change is breaking a lot of things.
