cant install hplip 3.11.10

Postby bwg on Thu Nov 10, 2011 9:41 am

Can someone suggest a method of upgrading to the newest hplip. I have a photosmart 6510 printer and it functions somewhat but certainly not fully. the printer requires hplip 3.11.10 and 3.11.5 is installed on my system.
I am running Linux Mint debian 1 with xfce.
I tried a manual install but encountered a "missing dependency" hell that was reminiscent of early red hat rpm packages.

No. It has missing dependencies. I believe libhpmud0 (or something like that)

Have you tried installing the hplip-data package first ? or other order ? Can you find that missing dependency in the Package Manager ?

Here is a list of all the currently available Debian packages : hplip Debian packages

I do have hp-data for ver 3.11.5.
I tried to run the manual installer but with each running it lists another unmet dependency. Now I suppose I could start adding these as I go but I am afraid of messing something up. I know that I did that more than once in years past while trying to upgrade packages.
I was hoping for a package that already has all the dependencies automatically there and installable.
The thing that is bugging me the most is that I bought this printer because I thought it was supposed to be so easily compatible with linux

right, I downloaded that package. It would not install though, due to missing dependencies.

dependency hell ! . . may have to wait for those incorrect library versions to catch up.

good luck, richy

when your choice of OS is a rolling distro, and it is based on and is tracking the Debian Testing repositories? what are your expectations ?

Now, on the other hand, changing the sources and tracking Mint's new Latest repositories and utilizing the new update packs, the Mint team may actually stabilize Testing. Time will tell.

good luck, richy

When an issue has been resolved for you, please edit the original post to include <SOLVED> in the title. This provides a good indicator for users with a similar problem to check out the thread.

Nah, that was my second choice. When I run it complains about missing dependency and when I resolve that and rerun. It complains of a new unresolved dependency. I've been there before. As I try to resolve each missing dependency I end up ruining my whole system. I'm not sayning that will happen here, but I don't want to chance it. I'm tired of re-installing os's.
I am already having a tough enough time dealing with the oncoming gnome3 and my rather elderly IBM T42 :)

fwiw I think I have solved at least part of my problem. Instead of using HP's automatic installer I followed their instructions for installing the tarball of the new drivers.
Far from perfect but I wanted to let others know who might face some of the same issues.
