KDE Wallet Service always asks if Chrome can open the wallet

Postby BostonPeng on Sun Nov 13, 2011 10:23 am

A very annoying behavior has occurred every day when I open Chromium and I'm hoping there's a way to stop it. Ever day when I launch Chromium I get a pop up from the KDE Wallet Service asking if Chrome can open the wallet. Chromium is my primary web browser Is there a way I can give persistent approval so I don't have to deal with the dialog on a daily basis?

I'm running Chromium 13.0.782.107 (Developer Build 94237 Linux) in KDE 4.6.5 on top of LMDE with Update Pack 3.

I cannot see the point of KDE Wallet at all, one of the first things I do after an install is to turn it off in System Settings/Account Details/KDE Wallet

How to you store your passwords without it? I suspect I knew back when I had my dearly departed desktop machine but it's been so long I honestly don't recall.

I ended up having to re-enable the KDE Wallet after all. I got sick of the default dark colors on ChromeDeck (the TweetDeck app for Chrome) and installed Air and TweetDeck but it complained that it couldn't access my passwords. Once I enabled the wallet again I can run TweetDeck with my nice Dodger Blue color scheme. C'est la guerre.

When i was running kubuntu i use to have the same problem...couldn't seem to get rid of that kwallet prompting for a password...and when i tried turning it off, then it wouldn't open password protected programs (like mail, messenger and yes, Chrome as well, since it stores your saved passwords from websites)....

I always had to log into it once, before i could access those type of programs, during a "session"...every time i would start off from a fresh boot, same "routine" again...
Kwallet would pop up and ask me for me password...Gnome has a password saver, but once set up it doesn't annoy you anymore

I'm back on gnome, but i'd be curious myself if there is an easy solution to that...it was one of the most annoying things i remember about using kde...

If I find anything I'll make sure it gets posted here, as well as to my blog.

hmm interesting i don't have this wallet issue. i forgot, did i dissable it or what?! or maybe you can set it so that it doesn't need the confirmation everytime but only on start.

then again i have only one user and it uses autologin on start.

maybe i changed one of the settings: http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdeutils/ ... odule.html

That's interesting, mastablasta. I use autologin myself but I still get the wallet login dialog when I first open Chromium every day after a restart. It may be because I have to power down my laptop every day but I've looked at the settings and I can't see what I could change that would make any difference.

I have always disabled KDE Wallet on new KDE installs, and have had no problems with Chromium or other programs storing login information. Can't say why though.

I had to renenable my wallet for TweetDeck, but only Chromium asks about it. But Chromium may be so insistent because it's always the first app I launch when I fire up my laptop.

I have kwallet disabled also. I only had to re-type my login names and passwords in the webbrowser for websites I frequently visit and which log-in data. After having done that once I never got the question again.
For a short period of time I also had some gnome programs installed and I was asked for the gnome password program (the gnome version of kwallet, I forgot the name) for my password over and over. I am now 100% on KDE, without kwallet and loving it. No more troubles of having to type the passwords. Before I forget, I also login automatically.

I switched off the KDE wallet service, as a bonus my laptop boots and runs faster.

Just open the application KDE Wallet -it's the configuration tool.

The first thing that you'll see there is a tab named "Wallet Preferences", whose first option is "Enable the KDE wallet subsystem". Just disable that thing, apply the changes and get rid of the wallet while staying in KDE, the best graphic shell ever conceived. 8)
