yep....windows 8 will be just like the switch on linux to gnome 3 shell and ubuntu unity....you'll be hearing the same "crying the blues" with that as we have here

If they had been watching the Unity/Gnome 3 stuff in the Linux community they might have learned something. But if you are Windows only user--what can you do about it? Maybe they will wise up and move to Linux Mint :-)

Good point...windows users are STUCK...unless they are willing to switch to Mac...but that is way different then what they are use to anyway (actually more like ubuntu 11.10 using unity)...their only other choice (other then coming over here to linux) is to use older versions of windows for years to come...

Actually, my hard install is currently ubuntu 11.10 and using unity...which i do not really mind much at all (i know that will "shock" many  )
However, the last few days i have been running Mint 12 RC on live session to get a feel for it...when the final comes out, i will have to decide which i
want to go with...go with the more "good ol days" feel of mint 12 mgse...or stay with the newer interface of ubuntu unity...

That's exactly what people are going to do. Business are going to do that for sure. Where I work their are over 25,000 employees and we all have WinXP sill. The company buys new computers with Win7 then puts WinXP. They have already said when supports stops for WinXP we will move to Win7. People's personal computer will not be upgraded. People seem to only upgrade their OS when they buy new hardware.

Oh, and your not the only one that like's Unity :D

Troy...that makes at least two of us here (who likes unity)

I think it could be because after i abandoned windows (about 3 years ago, i got involved with the MAC (had an imac for about 6 months) and liked it but decided i didn't want to get locked in to steve job's expensive hardware...otherwise i thought it was pretty cool and more fun then windows!

Soooo...Unity (which reminds me of my old mac) was fairly easy for me to adjust to... i even changed to the lighter (metal looking) theme and then it looked just like my old MAC! except that the dock is on the side instead of on the bottom...

I could have gone all the way and installed "cairo dock" for the "total effect" but decided to just keep it simple and stay with the unity dock...

So, when Mint 12 final comes out, i will have a big decision to make...stay with my new favorite Ubuntu 11.10 with unity...or...return to Mint and install Mint 12...
I could just as soon stay with ubuntu 11.10 and unity and it would be fine...so that is why i say, tough decision..i kind of like them both but i only want to have one system installed (not fond of dual booting)...

I must admit, Clem has done a pretty cool job on giving one gnome 3 but with a sort of "comfortable older way of doing things" interface through the MGSE extensions...

Wow, haven't you guys ever heard of dual-booting :-) It would drive me nuts if I only could choose one linux distro. I dual-boot, and may end up triple booting again like I did a few months ago, plus I have several usb sticks with distros on them, and if I get bored with all those there is always virtualbox. Man you guys live by some tough rules--only one distro, that would give me nightmares

Same here KBD47. There's too much goodness in Linux. Distro's are like that old potato chip commercial: Bet you can't use just one.

That's me, can't use just one. I dual boot Lubuntu 11.10 and Xubuntu 11.10 on my netbook. I dual boot SimplyMepis 11 and Mint 11 on my desktop computer. My wife's netbook has XP, Mint 9, and Ubuntu 11.04 with Classic Gnome desktop.
Next Spring I'm going LTS and will be done with actually installing new systems on my computers. I figure 5 year LTS will about last as long as my computers, but I will be dual booting LTS versions then :-) In the future messing with new distros will just be in Virtualbox and usb sticks. but that's next Spring :-)

Yes, Cool :-) I'm thinking dual boot of Xubuntu 12.04 and maybe Mint LXDE on my netbook if it is Ubuntu based LTS next Spring. Probably will just single boot Mint 13 on my desktop. I might actually leave Mint 9 on my wife's netbook till support runs out, and add Mint 13 in place of Ubuntu 11.04 But I have 5-6 months to think about it :-)
