But Mplayer based DVD players are doing just fine. What might I have done to goof things up?

Hi
Have you got libxine and libxine-ffpmpeg installed.
Also some systems have this problem when they are running Beryl.

It all seems to derive from how I launch the DVD movie with the various players software. If the correct "switches" are passed to the program, it runs the movie just fine, but if the incorrect (or no) switch(es) are sent, it just shows a screen full of pixelated goo while playing the movie soundtrack.
