without holding perl
54 upgraded, 5 newly installed, 218 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
The 218 that would be removed including most of kde. So not gonna happen. :)

with 'perl' held
56 upgraded, 6 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.

No issues here after updating and installing the 3.1 kernel.

Things have improved somewhat here since yesterday - twelve perl-related packages are now being offered on dist-upgrade, and only eight packages are being threatened with removal, none of which look system-critical. Perhaps in another day or two it will be safe to go ahead.

Yesterday apt-listbugs told me serious error gconf2 unsolved. That's why i thought gconf was the culprit for the removed packages.
Well, today the perl stuff only wanted to remove gtkorphan and qt4-fsarchiver.

OK..
So I did an update, without reading the fine print and Xorg got removed (on LMDE). So I took the opportunity to change "testing" to "unstable", did a dist-upgrade and installed xfce. Did I miss anything? Is there a more current XFCE/LMDE mint package than version 11?.

As a side note, vmplayer 4 doesn't like the new Liquorix kernel. I had to back off the new kernel.

Definite improvement today. Got through an upgrade and dist-upgrade this evening with only a few packages removed, none that looked critical. I now have the new kernel and nothing appears to be broken.

If you use Chromium, wait till it is fixed.

I see google-chrome-unstable (dev channel) crashing immediately on startup, on i386/wheezy and amd64/incoming. (Apologies for putting this in the sid forum, but I think it's relevant.)

Yes, I saw the same.

Fixed in latest release (Google Chrome 17.0.938.0 dev).

Success at last here this morning - sixteen perl-related packages upgraded and no packages removed. No backlash so far.

Nothing is ever as easy as it seems... I just got thumped back to newbie status when I took the gnome3 update.
It seems that for now, I have to be content with xfce, and the nouveau drivers (I was running gome/nvidia).

Additionally. I'm missing some things like:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure

won't work (can't find dpkg-reconfigure)

but if I use su, then dpkg-reconfigure, it will.

What did I goof up there?

Good Day

perhaps someone can give me advice :)

1.)
the bash-completion is not working well with sudo in Gnome-Shell terminals.
(without sudo also)

If I loged in tty3 its working as usual.
Code: Select all
tim@lmde:~$ apt-cache policy bash-completion
bash-completion:
  Installiert: 1:1.3-1
  Kandidat:    1:1.3-1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 1:1.3-1 0
        700 http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

2.)
Gnome login window has no font only this: [] [] [] [] & how I can change the background image?
I tried some links but no luck

3.)
If I start the new kernel 3.1 Nvidia is not working - no X. I tried nvidia-settings but get the error no display found.

Number 2.) is really awful

2) the working direct way to change the gdm3 Wallpaper
as root go to /usr/share/gdm/greeter-config and change the file contents directly.

10_desktop-base:
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /usr/share/backgrounds/linuxmint/default_background.jpg

20_debian:
# Use a specific background
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /usr/share/backgrounds/linuxmint/default_background.jpg
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_options stretched

these settings may be overwritten by a gdm3 update.
you may want to use another path to a picture... :D
there are other config files in /etc/gdm3 , but i dont get it working.
the font mismatch may be solved by an full reinstall of the gdm3 package. Do NOT logoff or reboot between!

3)
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf try these settings:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "IgnoreABI" "true"
EndSection
you dont need this if you update your nvidia-drivers to the newest version in the experimental repo (NVIDIA 290.06).

Hey gcp

I dont believe this is the correct path if using Gnome 3 shell. :?:
With the upgrade to Gnome 3 shell a while back, the login screen background changed from the default gray linuxmint one to a blue stripped 'Fedora' one?

My /usr/share/backgrounds/linuxmint/default_background.jpg still points to the mint one, but the blue one shows up.

Any ideas?

Thanxalot
I try to put one of my images into
Code: Select all
/usr/share/images/desktop-base
and change it with Inkscape to login-background.svg 8)
This works and also the NVIDIA Kernel issue. I do it like you said and installed the new driver.
Code: Select all
tim@lmde:~$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms/experimental

Now my lmde 3.1.0-1-amd64 is working
Will try now the gdm3 reinstall, perhaps then my font and with luck the bash-completion issue is gone

Thank you for your help
