Install LXDE in normal Mint 11

Postby newbie1187 on Wed Oct 26, 2011 12:35 pm

Hi!
This is my first post, so I guess I will introduce myself. I'm newbie1187, I'm 19 years old, and I'm spanish. I have a short experience with linux, but I always try to learn as much as I can :D

Well, here is the question:
I have alredy installed the LXDE desktop in my Mint 11 Katya gnome 32 bit, but i don't have all the mint artwork and features that the full "Mint 11 LXDE " has.
Can I have both desktops (gnome and LXDE) with all the features that mint offers, or should I install them separately?
If I can install them, can you tell me what packages/repositories should I add?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'm assuming you have the package "lxde" installed? Check in the Package Manager to be sure. That is a meta package, and it pulls in a lot of software for LXDE, like Openbox and PCManFM.

What features specifically are you missing? If these are applications, install them. Make sure to select the right session at the login screen, so no Gnome but whatever is there for LXDE or Openbox (at the bottom when you enter your password).

I'm sure you can get it almost similar to a separate Linux Mint LXDE install. But don't worry to much about it being exactly like Linux Mint LXDE; if you wanted that, you could have just installed it  You can take pretty much any application in a Linux distro and replace it with something else to your liking. The ultimate example of that are Arch and Gentoo, where you start with a minimal installation (just a terminal) and build it up yourself package by package to the system that you want.

I have a similar question... "Install LXDE in normal Mint" - but Mint 10. Can't seem to get Mint 11 onto this machine. I installed lxde with
sudo apt-get install lxde
and there were no error messages, but how do I get into lxde? Tried powering down, get straight back into Gnome when I reboot. Tried logging out, couldn't see a control to let me choose a desktop. Tried the Control Centre from the System section of the main menu, couldn't find an option to select the desktop.

I know I'm missing something obvious... but what?

Nevermind... I knew it would be obvious. Have to click on the user first. Then the option is at the bottom of the screen. Don't know how I missed that yesterday.

Sorry for bothering you.
