Would prefer not to install Proprietary drivers. Also nautilus does not allow tabs anymore. Is this too due to Gnome Fallback.

A couple of things here.
If you want to use the open source drivers then you have to accept that can only run gnome fallback (at the moment at least - because I did read that eventually it will run without the closed source drivers - it amazes me that it is released into mainstream gnome whilst it still relies on proprietary drivers, or maybe I have got it wrong, wouldn't be the first time )

Second, although I don't use Nautilus much I do have it installed and tabs work OK for me using both shell and fallback.

This forum's Nvidia Graphics Drivers - Install Guide worked for me.

There is no System Tools menu in the Shell. In fact no menus except what you get when you click on your name top right corner. You are not running Gnome Shell you are running Gnome3 Fallback. It means your graphics card is not installed properly.

following closely as i have ruined everything for the coolness and beautyof gs3

let's see:
if your desktop looks at least a bit like this, you are running fallback-mode: panel on top and on bottom, applications and places on the top left, clock on the middle, name on the top right




if it looks like this (more or less), you are running the shell: just one panel on top, with activities on the left, clock on the middle and name on the right

Oops, I am sorry you are correct there is no appearance entry. I should not write things from memory. There should be (in 3.2) Background and Screen. All other changes must be done through Gnome Tweak Tool, which appears as Advanced Settings in the Applications window. If you do not have Advanced Settings install the gnome-tweak-tool package from the standard repositories. Advanced settings has the usual things like font settings and widow and icon themes. To change the whole theme you need to add a theme extension and then download a theme and put in .themes in your home folder then you can select it from inside Advanced Settings.

I think I am reasonably certain I have Gnome fallback.
Because like ZZ said my desktop matches with the one he showed for fallback with a panel at both top and bottom and info from Name on Right --> System Setting --> System Info --> Graphics shows fallback.

And a little jittery to try out the apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental that you had suggested a day or so back. Afraid I will yet again bork my desktop. Keen to try but will hold off if we can see some other solution or may be OSS drivers.

Installed Gnome tweak tool and I now see Tweak Advanced setting in Applications --> Syetem Tools --> Preferences. BTW the theme currently running is Adwaita

For those of you hate hate evolution...I had this in my /etc/apt/preferences (basically blocks evolution from being installed or updated)

Pin: release a=fakerepo
Pin-Priority: -100

....take a wild guess what gnome3 requires...and subsequently hozed my gnome install when I wasn't paying enough attention...live and learn

Dist-upgraded a few days ago. I can login to gnome-fallback and that seems OK. I can't login to the gnome-shell. It just fails with a cryptic message and sends me back to the login window. GeneC posted earlier to the effect that Compiz must be off in the boot process. I'm unclear how to accomplish that. I want to have Compiz available if I choose to run gnome-fallback. But I'd like to experiment with gnome-shell.

- in fallback, open terminal and type

(you should see now the window with the startup services), look for compiz and disable it (untick the box next to it), now you should be able to run the shell;

if you want to go back to fallback and use compiz in a per session mode start it with

until you logout, you have compiz running;
what you can not have is compiz auto-starting when you are trying the shell.

Also, in gnome-fallback compiz is working to do window management, and the cube. So evidently it is starting at boot. Maybe there is a preference or config setting you are using for compiz that I am not?

To switch to metacity:

This seems like another way to turn compiz on and off, but trying it also looks for "pk-gtk-module"

Just updated to the 3.1.0.1 kernel. All is well except for virtualbox which no longer runs. Also the usual ways of starting virtualbox (vboxdrv setup, modprobe vboxdrv) don't work either.

Edit. One thing I did notice is that the upgrade (for me at least) did not include the kernel-headers package, although it is available so I installed it manually. It didn't fix the virtualbox error though.

Try installing packagekit-gdm3-module (worked for me, source of info is https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=643129)
