From Lucid to Katya

Postby Ginsu543 on Fri Nov 25, 2011 1:00 am

Hi, everyone. I joined a couple day ago, and I've been checking out the forums since then. I gotta say that this seems like a great place where people can share, argue, and learn with one another. I've been an avid Ubuntu user since 8.04 and 10.04 was the latest and greatest OS I'd been using on my main rig. Recently, one of my ram modules died on me, which in turn borked my 10.04 boot partition. I was pretty upset, but then decided to use this as an opportunity to try out Linux Mint 11. I've been very impressed! I've now got it customized just right, and can't be happier. Thanks to the Linux Mint team for offering such a superior product!

Now that I've got Katya all set up nicely, I will give Lisa a try once the final version is released. I want to see what all the hubbub around Gnome 3 and MGSE are about.

Welcome :D
If you like a classic desktop , you must download DVD version and choose MATE environment. It very similar with Katya Desktop.

Thank you karliet and nunoi for your welcome. I appreciate the info, Oscar799. So far, I love my Katya setup. It's configured just the way I want, and everything just works the way I expect it to. If it weren't for the death of Gnome 2 and the move to Gnome 3, I could've been happily married to Katya for the duration.

Katya has a full year of support so there is no problem there, by the time Katya reaches end of life both Mate and Gnome 3 with MGSE should be much better and you still have other DE's and WM's to chose from if you don't like either..

Yup, that's what I figured. I probably will keep Katya around as a backup OS even after it goes EOL, but as you said, by that time Gnome 3/MGSE/MATE should be much more mature and hopefully just as usable.
