Who's that in the rear view mirror?

Postby tek_heretik on Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:17 am

Ubuntu, lol. ;-D
Core 2 Quad Q9550(2.83GHz), 4 drive Raid 0 (320GBx4/1.28TB), 500GB storage drive, 8GB Kingston Hyper X, 23" LG LED, etc, running ONLY 64-bit Linux Mint. I don't like Microsoft AND Apple because of overpricing and their 'big brother' attitudes.

I still use Ubuntu, but I have KDE, XFCE and LXDE installed. I switch randomly and force myself to use Unity for periods of time. I've found that I prefer XFCE and KDE (XFCE more) over the others. Seems a lot of Ubuntu users may be leaving due to Unity without really giving the other desktops a chance. I have found in 11.10 that they're all pretty solid as alternatives and you stay with something you like and know. However, I still love my Mint and I'm still adapting to 12....not loving it yet. It's growing on me, but the menu improvements that hopefully will come in the future will make a big change in my outlook.

Yes, I have to admit to using Kubuntu 11.10 in addition to Mint 12.

I'm actually back on ubuntu 11.10 with unity and actually don't mind unity that much at all
I've toyed with kde a lot (mostly kubuntu) but never really quite warmed up to it but i think i am going to run it live again for a few days, (kubuntu 11.10) to see if i can finally "get into it"
I've always thought it was very attractive looking and do like that it has a more "conventional desk top"...with the one panel on bottom and "kick off" slab menu (which i like a lot actually)...

Aside from limited customization, theming, etc., the only real holdbacks from using Unity for me are the fact that I have no visual for what apps are open without adding another bar or getting the Unity bar back open to see the visual cues. Either of those limits screen space, at least during that process. Secondly, I don't want to switch between apps with a keyboard and on Unity there's just no easy method via touchpad on a laptop that I'm aware of. I jump often between web browser and spreadsheet, which is quite cumbersome in Unity. I actually like Unity, but those are show stoppers for me.

I haven't tried Unity but I am guessing it's just another PC 'smartphone GUI'.

Unity is the only DE that has actually made me physically angry enough to take out the live DVD and smash it against the wall crushing the disk and putting a dent in the dry wall.
Borman made my computer better.

tek...he obviously "over-reacted" ...it's actually not bad at all...but it's a bit different way of doing things and takes a little while to adjust...if you have an "open mind" you might find that you like it...suggest you play with it on a live session and see for yourself...while it could use more customization options (which will likely come in the near future) even as it is now, it is not bad to work with...If you ever used a mac system it would probably seem a bit easier to adjust to...

i actually like it better then gnome 3 shell....
instead of programs minimizing to the panel, they minimize to that side unity dock...you use the "dash" to search for applications (works great too) and there is a nifty windows switcher as well in that side docky panel...you can also "pin" all the favorites you want to the unity dock for quick access...
Like i said, just a slightly different way of doing things...some people just can't stand any change...

My holodeck is in maintenance mode, had to use a real rearview mirror: saw nothing there!
