I have been using linux for about 3 years now full time on my personal desktop. I use windows XP sp3 on my work laptop, and also have a personal laptop running windows 7 professional.
Even though I started playing around with linux a long time ago (1992-93 time frame), I never really used it full-time on my personal desktop. I used slackware for a while (downloaded and installed from 3.5" floppies). That 2-3 month experience installing slackware (don't remember which version I was using in 1994) was one of the most enjoyable of my life. I have also used redhat variants along with suse versions along the way.
About 3 years ago, being very tired of using (and paying for) windows, I tried out elive version of linux, and it wasn't too bad, except it was very unstable, frequently crashing. So I moved on. The next variant was parsix linux, which I really liked. I used this for several months and got used to the gnome 2 interface.
Then I tried linux mint 9 and really liked that, and upgraded to linux mint 10 a few weeks later, and then linux mint 11 when it was released. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to customize things and was able to get everything set the way I liked and how it seemed easiest for me to use.
Now I am using the just-released linux mint 12 version; so far my experience has been one of confusion. Things are so different that it is frustrating as well.
In any case, hope I can find some posts that explain the mysterious nature of the different work spaces that seem to be created catch-as-catch-can!! And disappear just as fast.
