LM 12-64 Live DVD not running on HP Pavilion g6 [CaseClosed]

Postby Cariboo on Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:15 pm

Hardware:
Laptop HP Pavilion g6-1b67ca
Memory: 8 GB
Processor: 4 Core AMD A6-3400 APU
Graphics: AMD Radeon(TM) Discrete-Class Graphics

Hello All,
I have a problem with my Laptop.
The LM 12 Welcome screen opens, I can select and run Memtest, but the screen turns black when "Lisa" starts to run from the DVD.
Strange enough, although I can hear the 'dongding' sound probably indicating that the system started, the screen stays black.
I have added the recommended boot option 'nomodetest' as mentioned above but I was not sure if I did it right, because nothing changed...still black screen when LM12 starts.
Please help!
Thanks

Was that a typo as the parameter should be nomodeset, and are you putting it in the right place - at the end of the line that ends quiet splash?

Yes, it was I typo...I entered it after two --at the end of the line...but to be sure I'll repeat the procedure right now...

EDITED: Dec 01 15:18
OK
I made a mistake when entering nomodeset at the end of quiet splash: there were two -- which do not have to be there!
I entered it without -- and i got a bit further.
The Live DVD started loading and ended with opening a Terminal.
I tried to continue with the command 'startx'. But without success. I attached two screenshots.

It's easy to figure out ~~I also have this problem with HP Pavilion g4-1057tu~~~you can try to turn up the blacklight by pressing the brightness button after the 'dongding' sound ~~Maybe it can help you~~

Thanks, but this is not the issue. If you look at my screenshots the system ends up loading with the opening of a Terminal on the whole screen.
I can enter commands like lsusb, cd /home, ls -l, find / -name <filename> and so on. For some commands I'm asked for a root password which I do not know.
At least there is some access to the system, but I'm not literate enough to get further.
Help needed!

Sounds just like my problem. Also an HP with an ATI Radeon: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=87518

Hope we get some help. You might want to try Linux Mint 11 (Katya) -- I haven't had a problem with that release.

Please use Compatibility Mode instead of the normal boot - you can edit it as well to add nomodeset if necessary.

Thanks...
The Graphics/GUI works when starting in Compatibility Mode
Yes, nomodeset is necessary!
Can I be sure it would work when I make a Hard Drive install?

Oh no. You're not the first person having trouble with an Atheros 9285.

I think you can just install Mint, and then install the graphics driver. After installing the driver you won't need nomodeset anymore.
You might need to boot recovery mode > low graphics mode the first time. If the boot menu isn't visible you can hold Shift just after the BIOS screen disappears.

I wonder why it works with Linux Mint 11 :?: where can I get the right driver for Atheros 9285 :?:

I think you can just install Mint, and then install the graphics driver.

Do you mean to install the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver :?:

Indeed, but you'd better get the Catalyst 11.11 graphics driver from AMD's website. The fglrx version in the repository is a bit old and doesn't work well with Gnome Shell.

About the Atheros wifi card.
You can install a newer kernel version, 3.1, with which it might work better: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40185

OK, thank you.
Before I do any of these things I would like to know why I didn't have difficulties with Linux Mint 11 :?:

It may be it is a silly question, but I wonder if it is possible to have rather the LM11 Kernel modules in Linux Mint12 than a newer kernel! LM 11 is running great on my Laptop HP Pavilion g6-1b67ca!
I tried already kernel 3.1.4 from HERE but no success.
Can any body help me with this issue?
Any suggestion is appreciated.

Did you already try the Catalyst 11.11 graphics driver?

The ATI/AMD graphics drivers have always been buggy when using the Gnome 3 desktop. With Gnome 2 they work fine. As the drivers are closed-source only AMD can fix this.

Perhaps you can press E on the Grub bootloader screen and add nomodeset on the next-to-last line, and boot that way. After that you can install the 11.11 drivers from AMD's website.
You might need to hold Shift just after the BIOS screen disappears, for the Grub screen to be visible.

Will this ever happen :?:

Boot in the normal mode with nomodeset option brings me to a full screen Terminal. To get out I need to be su. Password unknown. Only way out turn Off computer.
Boot in Compatibility Mode with nomodeset option works.

I decided not to install LM12 because I fear I have to deal with graphic-, wireless-, bluetooth- and you name it- issues all over again. I'm really tired of that and I don't understand why this has to be that way.

AMD have promised that the 12.1 driver will work better. I think Mint 13 next year will have it working fine.

And if Mint 11 (or 9 or 10 for that matter) works for you, just keep using it.

Ahh, been trying to get Linux Mint 12, on my HP Pavilion g6-1c58dx, AMD A6-3400M - AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6520G

I get the blank screen as well...

--nomodeset doesn't bring up the command-prompt for me... (on LM12 normal or compatibility mode)

LinuxMint 11, compatibility mode installs fine however. I even tried upgrading to LM12 after LM11... got the blank screen on reboot.

Weird because Ubuntu 11.10 --nomodeset does give me a command prompt... maybe I'm entering it in wrong??

EDIT: sweet I got linux-mint 12 to work!

"nomodeset" had to be place after "nosplash" or "quiet splash" ... I was placing it at the end of the line!

Then I installed AMD Catalyst 11.12, now I can boot without nomodeset with all the graphics widget goodness of LM 12 !

:)

It does not really matter where nomodeset is, as long as it's before the two dashes (--). Make sure there's a space between nomodeset and the dashes, when you place it at the end, so no "... nomodeset--" but rather "... nomodeset --".
