Got all of those installed, compiles and installs fine, but if I turn it on the shell crashes to a list of extensions with on/off switches and a log out button.

Reported version

Postby GregE on Fri Dec 02, 2011 7:14 pm

My system is thoroughly Gnome 3.2 but it still steadfastly reports itself as 3.0.2. This occasionally causes issues. Does anyone know where the ver file resides?

I am out of ideas other than the base system. Mine is Sid AMD64 with just enough experimental to make it 3.2.

One last try, if you are keen, is the big nuke. Unintstall all the extensions and then login as recovery and remove the gnome-shell config and start again. Remove /home/xircon/.local/gnome-shell

Then login normally for a standard gnome 3.2 shell and start adding bits.

Mine shows the correct version using that command. But in System Settings -> System Info it still shows 3.0.2 and when I go to gnome.org it says I am using 3.02. So the system is reporting the old version. It has to be a ver file somewhere.

I could just grep my entire system for the string 3.0.2 but that might take all day. Or it might be a bug in the Debian version of System-Info

Not tonight, its 23:30ish and I am on my last pint of cider :) (watching Underbelly - which is a bit spooky, we don't get a lot of Aussie TV other than rubbish soaps).

Mine also shows 3.0.2, perhaps someone forgot to change it?

Steve,

The best of our local TV is now on Foxtel cable. Watch out for "The Slap" which has caused a big discussion on modern child rearing.

A new website has gone "live" today: https://extensions.gnome.org/

It's going to be a central place for extensions....looks interesting...I have not tried any yet.

Nice little feature...it shows your installed extensions & can allow on/off of them from the webpage....

Update: the site works very well--notification of install & time to install is very nice....This is going to be a VERY handy site!!!!!

NOTE!!!! it's only carrying 3.2 extensions..I would guess that there will be disclaimers very soon as to what version(s) the extensions are for.

Not too surprised...it looks like the site has a "sniffer" for the version of Gnome3 you are using....

That's how it can turn your extensions on/off from the webpage.

:) When you click on a extension you get a very nice install dialog box....So I would say that you could very politely say "no" ;)

Shoot--Gnome3 is just XML & CSS---so it's not much trouble to create a web interface for it....think of a CUPS printer web page or the pages for your router.....

As for plots.......well, they can be everywhere...a Gnome3 take over the world plot? Sounds like a Anti-Microsoft plot to me......I'm all for it.

In all seriousness....I could think of several exploits that could take advantage of this.......Looks like some safeguards ought be put in place...

OK--last thought for the night---at the bottom of the main page is a "suggestions & bug report" link...takes you to Gnome Bugzilla. So if you have a Bugzilla account you can raise questions there....I did.

1>. Installed Firefox Nightly (because this didn't work on FF Mint v5 already installed).

2>. Went to extensions.gnome.org, no complaints about browser.

3>. Tried to install battery percentage, clicked on the on/off

4>. Nothing happens :(

Recorded a short video http://youtu.be/m7RIlVECSh0 (for which I am expecting an Oscar nomination).

Wonder if this is a problem with the version (picked up by GregE last night).

Steve

:Edit: gnome-desktop3-data on my system is still at 3.0.2 as it wants to uninstall everything!

This new site (extensions.gnome.org) is a really necessary and useful idea, bar one thing. Although I can list all my installed extensions and even switch them on and off from the web page, there is no way I can install any new ones. I think I have clicked just about every clickable link on the page looking for some way to do this but I can't find it.
I notice autocrosser said:

I don't.
I am using Gnome 3.2 and Firefox 8 - what else have I got to do?

Forget it. I just watched xircon video and that gave me the answer, click on the on/off button (I though it was just an image, not a button).

So it is not just me. Have you got gnome-desktop3-data held?

My edit crossed with your post. You have already solved it for me - thank you.
BTW in answer to your question this is not LMDE I am using (I only have 3.0.2 on that) it is Fedora - no need to hold packages on that yet.

So it is just me?

Got to admit, it might be a slick design, but a bit of explanation on the site on how to install would have been helpful :)
