So, I have this problem where the icons for programs (like dropbox, jupiter, the package updater) disappear and are replaced with gray boxes in the 'system tray.' The boxes are still clickable and functional, but you can't tell which is which because the icons have disappeared. This is a fresh install of linux mint 12. Anyone else having this problem/know how to fix it? It occurs randomly, but is also easily reproducible if I make the top bar auto-hide.
Thanks for any info, really looking forward to getting more involved with the mint community.

Re: Program Icons in system tray disappear
None of those are really along the lines of my problem. I appreciate the help though. I'm sure I can figure it out with enough time. For now I will stick with MATE and call it a day. Perhaps switch back to archlinux and openbox if I can't figure out what the problem is with GNOME.
Re: Program Icons in system tray disappear
I have exactly the same problem. I'm attaching a screenshot to illustrate my point. I'm on a default Gnome desktop in LM12, fresh install.

Linux Mint 20 MATE
Re: Program Icons in system tray disappear
That picture is exactly what is going on. For now I just restart gnome to fix it.
Re: Program Icons in system tray disappear
Does anyone know a workaround for that?

Re: Program Icons in system tray disappear
Yeah - I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 + cinnamon, and I have this problem too.
Disappearing in Mint 14 Cinnamon as well
My icons are disappearing in Linux Mint x64 Cinnamon as well. Anyone ever find a workaround? The text of programs that are running in the taskbar \ system tray are garbled although their icons are ok. The text is similarly garbled for "menu" on the far left although that icon is also a gray box
Re: Program Icons in system tray disappear
Yep happened about 50% of the time from a cold boot or logging out back in on Mint 14 Cinnamon 64bit.
Restart Cinnamon or logging out back in seemed to fix it. And so regular installed the Restart Cinnamon applet to make it a one-click fix affair. Still never got a explanation or even the Mint team is aware of the issue? Gtk? Cinnamon? display drivers?
My suspicion is theme related as seems more problematic on darker themes?
