shortkeys

Postby ERwan on Sat Dec 03, 2011 12:21 pm

Hi. I'm both a Mate user, and a newbie on Linux.

Here is my problem :
Some key binding do not work when I use Mate desktop (they do work with Gnome3).
I can't open the menu with <Control>Super_L, nor change the sound volume with the special key on my keyboard.
Still, the other keyboard setting seem to work well (french letters for example).
Is there somethhing I should configure ?

Ok. Thanks.
So maybe I should have published my thread in the newbies section, because I don't know the commands for opening the menu, nor for changing the sound volume.

I've tried a couple of other things, and I realized the following :

If I try configure a key binding using the XF86AudioLowerVolume key, a warning says that an action is already binded to this key : Lowering the sound. But when I use the key, the sound doesn't get lower...

Also, in the menu options, there is a field for a key binding. The initial value of this field is "<Control>Super_L", but pressing theses keys don't open the menu, and I don't manage to set any shortkey this way.
And at last, I realized that pressing the Window key closes (but doesn't open) the menu.

If you are sure of that, you would have to look at the key binding code (or applications being run from that keypress
Try it in a terminal to see any effects on sound: note whether or not a GUI program is being started by that keybinding(keypress)
--you would have to match the code fragment being used for that keystroke, but the terminal will give you a better idea of whether or not that code is working for sound control ..

Examples of key binding setups, playing around with them..

super key, there can also be bugs (Gnome3 for example) in any provided/default programs/desktops

I would probably check that applications' status and any issues it currently has..

You can also do every key manually, but that means determining what a keypress executes, and that is much more involved.

Thanks DrHu for these links.
I actually figured out how to configure a keybinding. For example, I can make Ctrl+Alt+G open gedit. But I don't manage to make it open the menu, nor change the sound volume.

shortkeys tricks, day 2.

Here is the progress of my investigations :

It appears that the Windows key and the audio keys (volume, play, next, etc.) are recognized by the system : I've managed to bind some commands on them, such as opening gedit.
Still, there are some events that for any reason I can't bind on them. (opening the menu, controlling audio)

If I knew the commands for opening the menu or raising the sound volume, I could try to bind these events through custom additional keybindings.
So here is my first question today : what are theses commands ?

The second question is : Does anyone, on MATE environment, manages to open the menu or control audio with his keyboard ?

I am not running MATE at the moment, but LMDE.

I can open the Menu by Ctrl+Super. (Super is the ugly one with a win-flag. ;) )
Volume up is Fn+Uparrow. Volume down is Fn+Downarrow.

Perhaps it is dependent on keyboard also.

I will try it in MATE next time I do login.

Edit: Now i have checked myself. You are right, Ctrl+Super don't open the Menu in MATE.
I can't control the volume either... But the brightness adjustment of the screen works fine. :)

We have to wait for a while, I'm sure it will be fixed soon.

Same here. Keyboard shortcuts don't work in MATE but work in Gnome 3. I mean the ones using Fn key and other keys such as volume, mute, etc. I have a Lenovo T510. In Gnome 3 all shortcuts work flawlessly. I really prefer to use MATE, but this issue is turning me off it. Looks like I will to go to Gnome 3 and get used to the frequent crashes of Gnome-shell ...

Note that this is not a Compiz/Metacity issue. My compiz is turned off.

I found this topic after searching for keyboard shortcuts in Mate. Same issue here on Sony Vaio VPCS123FG. None of the shortcuts using the Fn key work including volume control, mute, brightness control and screen/projector switch, even after I assign them manually. All of them worked in Gnome 3 except screen switch, which I haven't tried. I tried assigning different keys such as Super or Ctrl but those have no effect as well (no GUI response and no increase/decrease in volume when I play music).

This bug is known in Launchpad as bug #891424 (and probably bug #898184 as well). The Mate developers know about it as Mate-Desktop-Environment issue #55. According to the latter, the bug has already been fixed; we just have to wait until the Mint folks update the affected package(s).

found this on launchpad. don't know if it works.

You'll need to add the following two lines to /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://tridex.net/repo/ubuntu/ oneiric main
deb-src http://tridex.net/repo/ubuntu/ oneiric main

And then you'll need to adjust your apt preferences. I adjusted mine to look like the following:

Package: *
Pin: release o=linuxmint
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: origin packages.linuxmint.com
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release o=Ubuntu
Pin-Priority: 500

Package: *
Pin: origin tridex.net
Pin-Priority: 700

I'm a little curious if this is truly resolved. I just install Mint 12 Main, and I'm not getting the shortcuts to work in Mate either, however they work find in Gnome.
