LibreOffice opening MS Office Documents

Postby WhatUsernameIsFree? on Sun Dec 04, 2011 5:10 am

Hi,

My university have just upgraded all their MS Office versions and now LibreOffice won't open the documents with the correct spacing. An example of this is below. Is there a way to fix this? I really don't care how I save my documents, if I have to change to .docx by default, then so be it.

Thanks

Just for your information, the purple background is intentional.

Hi

I don't think it is a Mint problem, rather a LibreOffice one (or to be strictly true an intended M$ one  ). Perhaps you could find a quicker solution in a LibreOffice or OpenOffice Board?

If you would put the file (opr part of it) in an attachment, I would volunteer to try it on my machine.

This is a really good example below, copy'd and pasted (from a 22 page document). Other examples just include a single page document spaced ever so slightly wrong so it goes onto two pages.

Hi

I tried to change the table, so it can be used. This took about 20 mins. However, whichever «computer savvy» office clerk did the job, should really go and learn how to do this, regardless whether it is with Word or any other wordprocessor. Perhaps a few lessons in USING the facilities of wordprocessing programms might be useful.

What would actually have interested me more than the *.odt-File would be the *.doc-file to try out different import filters.

But, nervertheless, if you can use it now, just take it.

Funnily, I had to format and design a couple of weeks ago an assessment form for my wife. She teaches Creative Writing at the Argyll & Highlands University.

So, now I have a problem:
Code: Select all
Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.
is what I get when I want to upload the file. If you want it, you have to send me your mail address by PM.

Hi, thanks. Any idea what the solution to this is? The only idea I have involves using Virtualbox to install Windows XP and MS Office, but that is a major pain in the backside, using many Gigabytes to solve a few KB problem. I really don't like having to learn a new OS just to open a few documents.

Is there a universal guide I can use for future documents?

No, please do not get exited. As I said, the main problem is the person who wrote the table in Word. She/he has really no knowledge about word processing above how to use the keyboard. But it is symptomatic about British timewaster-schools as I have experienced them. A modern Office Suite (does not matter which one) can not be learned in a couple of hours, especially not the more complicated parts like a larger table or soft formatting. Or how to include pictures correctly into a docuement. As long as people stay on the same system (MS or OO or LO) there will be just minor problems, but once the files are used cross OS, the problems really begin.

So, no I have no solution. Certainly not over a virtual box. Except learn really to use your libre Office, buy yourself a good book (one for Writer and one for Calc) and start studying them intensively. Make the exercices, go to the appropriate forums and ask there if you run into problems or have questions. And use «Inkscape» for Vector graphics instead of «Draw» and «Scribus» instead of «Impress». «Base» can easily be replaced with «Mysql» and other, better database programs. So, really you need to know two out of the 6 offered apps, but these «à fond».

I'm on a full time University course with placements, so I'll have to resort to Virtualbox.
