Mint is great and I preach the word, but the single panel and slick design of Mint 11 has been lost in Mint 12 for me. I have no hard feelings, but Mint 12 - to me - feels like it is trying to keep too many happy, especially those who resist change and yearn for them good 'ol Gnome 2 days. That is, Mint 12 feels a bit "all over the place" without a single focused direction, and has disappointed me a bit.
As a creative, I enjoy aesthetics, and Ubuntu 11.10 is heaps better than 11.04, and far quicker and more functional. And it feels like it is very focused and headed into its own Unity direction, despite a lot of angry and vocal users.
As a Mint fan, I'm going to hang around and see where Mint 13 goes, but for now, I'm sticking with Ubuntu again. (Thanks to choice.)

thankyou wrote:Hey,
recently i just tried linux mint for the first time. at first it looked slick and promising, but mint 12 feels pretty laggy. too many lockups and sluggishness on a fresh install. im going to install ubuntu on this machine and see if there are any research-worthy differences to report.

What purpose do you think it (chatting) serves?
More chatting. Discussion. Debate. No debate. More chatting. No chatting. Moderation. No moderation. Does it matter?
This is, if I'm correct, a general "chat" forum?

Aethyr...that's been my observation about unity also...like it better then gnome 3 shell...though i suspect gnome 3 shell is improving with extensions...
I also suspect unity will also get even better and more flexible as it evolves (after all, it..like gnome 3 shell is fairly young at this point)...i think things will
eventually get sorted out and hopefully there will be less complainers![]()
Must be interesting running unity on mintwill be interested in your observations also...

Actually craigx10, that's EXACTLY what I'm doing on my laptop. I figured I'd install it for sh1ts and giggles and see how Mint runs on it (I don't feel that Unity is the abomination that so many 'Nuxers say it is - Ubuntu 11.10 has a good amount going for it). It actually looks good and runs quite nicely over Mint. If I could change the Dash logo from the Ubuntu/Canonical logo to the Linux Mint logo, I'd be golden.
I think I might just turn some of the MGSE add-ons on my GNOME desktop and see how that runs for a while.
....dear god, I LOVE Linux!!!

Aethyr wrote:So I'm not the only heretic in the Mint camp after all![]()
Seriously, Unity runs incredibly smoothly on Mint, as expected. My only problems so far have been compiz-related, and admittedly, the fact that I'm on an ATI card probably isn't helping. Unity itself runs marvelously. Not to mention the fact that Mint theme > Ubuntu theme so it looks prettier than the Ubuntu vanilla one by far

craig10x wrote:Nice...so you got Unity with Green instead of Orange![]()
By the way, on Ubuntu, i use the light theme (i think it is called radiance) for a more mac-like look...![]()
Now that i got use to it, i find i can really "fly around" on it...makes me scratch my head when i read some of the complaints about it

craig10x wrote:Yes...it looks like between the ubuntu developers and the gnome 3 developers that the gnome people should have listened to ubuntu more...![]()
I think ubuntu is on the right track with this...and it is bound to get even better over the next year or two...in the meanwhile it's quite usable already and easy to work with...once you get USE to it...which is the "key factor" that i think some of the unity and gnome 3 haters seem to miss...
