Actually, the closest to Mint for older hardware is not Ubuntu based
I am talking about Vector Linux 5.8 Std Gold : ok, it is Slackware based, but it has all the goodies & the "dirty soft" that you might want... I have it on 3 slower PC's and it does a great job.
No offense to Clem & the Mint team, as I run Mint on my main box, but it was just my opinion, as I tried Xubuntu and it is much slower than Vector.
Alternative Install CD?

If you want to stick with an Ubuntu base for older hardware, give this a spinIain wrote:Mint probably is not the best choice for old hardware as it uses Gnome. How about Xubuntu, which uses XFCE? They have an install CD.

I ran Fluxbox for about a year, then when Gnome v2.14 came out I used that through v2.16. But I've since went back to Fluxbox again, it's just too damn sweet. Highly customizable, very fast and sexy.
