Why Mint 12 Will Rock The Linux World

Mint is very easy for me to set up in Fallback, and it doesn't need all those tweaks Ubuntu needs just to make it usable for me. It took me very little time to set up our computers in Mint 12. As I just posted elsewhere:
Why not use Mint 12 in fallback? It comes out of the box with fallback, you just need to log in. I installed Mint 12 to all 4 of our computers and all 4 are set up in Gnome Classic/Fallback mode. You just use the alt-right-click on the panel to move and adjust and add things, not really much different than Gnome 2. And you can adjust the panel to solid color which isn't solid at all but makes the bottom panel see through, which is nice. I have 2 of our computers with the traditional 2 panel set up like in Ubuntu 11.04 fallback, the other two I have set up with just one bottom panel.

Nothing special done with any of those. I did it all by alt-right-click on the panel using properties and adding and moving icons. The clock-weather preference is accessed by a simple right click. And of course you just log in to Gnome Classic on Mint 12. I deleted the bottom panel and moved the top panel to the bottom. Really the only thing from Gnome 2 I miss is the Mint menu. Maybe if someone will ask Clem nicely he can get that to work in Gnome Classic for us.

The translucent bottom panel is very cool indeed. (Ah... GNOME 2.... you will be missed)

But isn't the fallback mode temporary?
I believe once Gnome-Shell can be run without video acceleration, the fallback mode will be done away with.

Until then, GNOME 2 lovers can find temporary solace in the fallback mode and heal their aching hearts... (getting emotional over a desktop environment... Man... those cool kids in schools were so right... I am a nerd. Anyone else feeling glum? This nerd needs a hug ... GNOME 2... oh you beauty ... I'll keep you alive on my Debian 6 box...)

Yes, I have no doubt that ASAP the Gnome devs will choke the life out of this usable, very nice Fallback mode, can't have something this useful around for long But my hope is that Fallback/Classic will make it to the LTS release next Spring, and if it doesn't, perhaps MATE and MGSE will be improved by then. At least we have it now, and there are always my two other favorite desktops LXDE and Xfce.

I don't even see why Gnome dropped support for Gnome2. They all say it was buggy, it was unstable, etc etc...but you know what? I've used Gnome2 since early 2010 (when I first entered the world of Linux) and I did not have one...single...issue...with it...EVER.

Gnome 2 is fast.
Gnome 2 is stable.
Gnome 2 is sleek, clean and organized.
Gnome 2 is customizable.
Gnome 2 is quite light on resources compared to Gnome 3.
Gnome 2 is great for overall performance of a Linux system.

When Gnome decided to drop support for it, I swear the developers must have been taking some pretty hardcore drugs at the time...

Okay, so I just wanna keep trying new things ...I've moved from 11 to 12 just recently (after waiting to let them have a go at fixing whatever few bugs there might have been) and like it ... just as I've liked Mint from the beginning. They've managed to improve even more on an already improved Ubuntu-based OS. I've got no problems with Gnome one way or the other ... 2 or 3, (ie: there're no emotional ties to 2). It's been a fun and easy OS and continues to be fun and easy. Although the complete re-install just to accomplish the upgrade might seem a bit tedious, it works just fine and makes sense ... really ... and is actually no more tedious and time consuming that the Ubuntu method of accomplishing the same thing, particularly after having to make some "repairs" with Ubuntu to get up and running after and upgrade. Don't be foolish 'bout backing up, though ... just do it before your upgrade!

I just wanted to say that I agree with OP on Linux Mint 12 being totally awesome and I have been following Mint since the very beginning and I can honestly say that this time they actually filled a huge gap in my linux world!
I like Ubuntu. I don't like Unity! I can install Gnome 3 on Ubuntu, but it's still just as if it is the 2nd DE.
While that pushed me over to Fedora 15 and 16 to get a better feeling of Gnome 3, I realized I was missing good ol' Gnome 2
Biggest problem on Fedora was incompatibility with Gnome 2 and the futuristic Gnome 3 making work-flow non-existing (Though I really love the default looks of Fedora).
Therefore I am totally getting why Linux Mint 12 made Lisa the way they did!
It is the (perfect?) combination of a modern Gnome 3 and good ol' Gnome 2 + compatibility with everything Ubuntu 11.10 has to offer in terms of packages and settings.

I actually created a user on Mint forum because I liked this new desktop so very much!
