Repositories - what am I doing wrong?

Post by ianM »

Hi, I'm a newbie with faith in Mint but no real experience of command line adventures - in the extract below I've just copied and pasted commands from various forum posts. I've just re-installed LMDE because I kept getting error messages on updates ['failed to fetch' etc] Now I can see that there are 308 updates waiting for me but I can't get them to download. I think I have the right repositories listed. Any ideas to help me get things working properly?

With the command

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install mintupdate-debian
you want to install the package mintupdate-debian. At the end the command tells you

Code: Select all

mintupdate-debian is already the newest version
what means, mintupdate-debian is already installed. Why don't you use it for the upgrades?

If you want to use the command line the command is:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Thanks for that, Gerd50.
I tried the command line you suggested. [see below for printout]
It looked good in part, but starts and finishes with a lot of error messages, and the final line
< E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing? >
didn't respond to a Y answer....

Your update was errorous,, some packages were not completely downloaded..

as suggested in the red highlight, the thing for you to do is

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-missing

and hope that it continue to looks for missing packages, download them and proceed

Re: Repositories - what am I doing wrong?

Post by wayne128 »

I am not sure what was the issue on server, or your issue with internet..

this Could not resolve 'debian.linuxmint.com' might means you have some trouble getting connected with the server..

I suggest that a bit a time to check internet connection to debian.linuxmint.com using two commands

1. ping debian.linuxmint.com to see how it respond to your ping
2. do a traceroute to see if connection complete

hope you get the proper connection.

Then it just kept going like the sorcerer's apprentice until I found on google that I had to press CTRL+C to stop it!
The final output was

compaq-kitchen ian # traceroute debian.linuxmint.com
debian.linuxmint.com: Name or service not known
Cannot handle "host" cmdline arg `debian.linuxmint.com' on position 1 (argc 1)
Sound like you could not establish connection with server.

may be you need to work on dns or ISP.

Are you behind a proxy perhaps? (Sry, if this was already mentioned - sitting at work and not having that much time...)

if, you should set it correctly in apt
like this:
make a file called 10proxy in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ and put:
Acquire::http::proxy "[username:password(base64)@]proxy:port";

also add a http_proxy and ftp_proxy line in /etc/wgetrc

http_proxy = [username:password(base64)@]proxy:port
ftp_proxy = [username:password(base64)@]proxy:port

if it still doesn't work, try it through synpatic ;)

I had just a look at the other side of the wall...

As I needed one app update, I installed for some minutes this repo: (btw it's conflicting with a Mint repo)
deb http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian wheezy main

I was just informed that over 800 updates were waiting... If you add MATE and some other Mint MGSE goodies, I think that when the new update pack will come, maybe in January 2012, we can expect 1500 updates (my guess). It will be the rolling release closest to tsunami release.

And now, let us pray. :D

Yes, I do that some times too. I've came to wonder whether it wouldn't be possible to push specific apps before the update packs. For example, apps which have no or very few dependencies (and are not core to the system) could be pushed to the mint repos somewhat earlier. I don't know whether this is possible or easy to do/maintain.

Off topic: Hi hopimet. I thought you were on aptosid.

Hi Berneri,

I was! But I changed a few months ago and switched to LMDE because I had too many bugs with my Nvidia card.
