UK based beta testers wanted

Many UK users use get_iplayer as a convenient way to record BBC iPlayer programmes, and it's very likely that a lot of people use the giPlayer python frontend. However, giPlayer only supports recording, and doesn't provide any method to just watch a programme.

So I've modified it to include a "Play" function. It should work with vlc, mplayer and ffplay. quality and default player are settable via the preferences dialogue.

It's working here, but that's hardly a conclusive test, so if there are any get_iplayer users who would be willing to beta test it for me, please grab the copy and give it a try:

extract the tar.gz, cd into it the giplayer directory and as root run install.sh.

The actual giPlayer script can be located wherever you want (the install script will ask where you want it), but the ui file is hardcoded to /usr/share/giPlayer - hence the need for root. To run the script simply run

Hi,
Can you point to a link for the giplayer python please?
I just tried with adobe air bin file, which ive installed ok along with two apps for air but iplayer keeps crashing out with (BBC iPlayer Desktop:846): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to load type module: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so

Application crashed with an unhandled SIGSEGV
Crashlog has been dumped in /tmp/airCrashLogs/1211_1555_8EcZxv

So i have decided to have a gander as this get-iplayer with the giplayer frontend but cant seem to locate the frontend for it, ive downloaded your file but need giplayer first

I got the original source from the same place. However, my modified version is uncompiled, so you can view the code in any text editor/python IDE just by opening it as such.

Edit: Just thought, make sure that you have python-gtk2 and python-glade2 pacakages installed.

This works flawlessly, what a great addon/patch/upgrade (pick your poison) these two items make to get_iplayer. I used get_iplayer on its own and although it is a superb bit of work with many functions having a gui makes it easier and opens it up to many users who may not be that confident in using the cli. The play button is just the icing on the cake, cheers Roken.
