Is anybody else's Flash player broken? All browsers, jittery, stops and is unwatchable, tested on BBC.

:edit: appears to be pulse related, if I disconnect pulse then reconnect, they play OK.

OK just in case anyone gets the same problem the fix is:

Maybe just me. I was also getting "PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions ... (warning)." message on boot and my user was not a member of either of the two pulse groups.

This problem only started yesterday, been getting that error message a while.

After the latest updates, when I open some applications (Chrome, Nautilus, Bleachbit, Libreoffice...), the system crashes (but not with the same application) and I have to reboot

Try the Pulse fix, my browser was locking up my machine and I had to ctrl+alt+backspace to log out. I also added my user to both pulse audio groups.

:Edit: Forget it, if I play a flash video in Chrome and then try and close it, it locks everything up and I have to ctrl+alt+bkspace and log in again.

Related to the audio issues: I noticed that after the recent batch of updates a rather large number of "ALSA Plugin (gnome-settings-daemon)" entries showed up in the list of applications using the audio system, I don't know whether or not that might have something to do with the sudden issues with audio playback (which also may be why Flash content crashes the plugin-container for Firefox/Iceweasel) but it does seem unusual and never happened before the updates... I'm unsure what specific package(s) might have caused this but I'm trying to figure it out...

If anyone running Debian Sid/Experimental could possibly come up with a list of only the packages updated yesterday I might be able to track it down... Unfortunately I restored a week-old backup to revert my system to a properly working state so I have to catch up on the past week's updates, and I can't determine which were specifically from yesterday...

Thanks, that should be helpful.

I notice there are a large number of gstreamer updates, including gstreamer0.10-alsa, which, given what I noticed, seems like it could be the culprit. I'm updating everything excluding gstreamer-related packages currently, and will make a quick backup before I proceed any further should everything still be performing correctly. Afterward I'll update the gstreamer packages excluding gstreamer0.10-alsa, then if everything still performs properly, we'll have nailed it down.

EDIT: Well, I'm not sure what the problem is but it's not the gstreamer packages... It didn't manifest itself until after I rebooted when I skipped them though. I also noticed that Banshee could not play audio *at all* until after I pulled in the updated gstreamer packages. I'm not sure how helpful this might be to anyone, but more information is usually a good thing.

I'm going to try starting again from the old backup and skip some more packages that may be problematic.

I started thinking these problems might be hardware related?
I am not having any video or sound problems with LMDE_SID Gnome. I have pulled in some packages from Experimental to get Gnome 3.2, but cant see where that would be a problem. I am full updated. I did a hard reboot, and rechecked sound and video (you tube, and bbc). All seems fine to me.

@GeneC I've determined it's not the gstreamer packages causing the audio issues I'm having. I'm fairly certain it's not hardware related, since the problem only manifested itself following updates applied yesterday and is not present on either the earlier LMDE backup I have nor on my secondary OS, Mint 12 'Lisa'. I'm currently going through the list of updates and selectively installing what I can determine is safe, and I'll try to narrow things down from there...

Yes, I don't think it is hardware, problem is definitely due to updates. The pulse fix I mentioned solves part of it, but Chrome still occasionally hangs, so I am using xkill to shut it.

Thanks GeneC, that should help. I'm going to try to get everything up until yesterday's updates applied since I know everything worked fine up to that point, then I'm going to make a backup of that state since I don't wanna have to keep updating everything else...

I'll keep you all informed of my efforts. With any luck I'll pin this down.

Just a thought. A week or so ago d-u wanted to install libavcodec-extra-53, libavutil-extra-51, libpostproc52. First i held this
pks back, because they wanted to remove ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, winff, smplayer. Some days later i installed them,
reinstalled the removed pks and my system is healthy since then.

Maybe libavformat53, libavutil51, libpostproc51 could be the culprits?

I doubt it, I don't have any of those last three packages installed, I have the first three you mentioned though, and those were installed before my week-old backup, so they should be safe...

EDIT: Well whatever it is, I installed it yet again, so now I'm having to revert to the backup and try again.

I think I'll save myself some frustration and just install everything I definitely want updated (GNOME 3.2 stuff mostly) and leave everything else the heck alone until I get a fresh backup made, this way if I can't figure it out at least the stuff I actually care about is updated... This is proving to be more difficult than I expected...

EDIT #2: Just realized Gerd50 was probably talking about something else unrelated to the issue I'm pursuing, disregard my earlier babbling...

EDIT #3: I think I've narrowed it down to libc, which specific package I don't know and I'm hesitant to try them all individually, if that's even a possibility... I'm going to whip up a quick backup just to save myself the frustration of reinstalling everything else again before I go any further...

EDIT #4: I've narrowed it down as far as I can, all of the libc packages need to be upgraded as a group, so I cannot test them individually to attempt to narrow it down further. I would have to hazard a guess that reverting them to their Testing version (the currently installed version on my system) would revert audio playback and other affected areas to normal, but I cannot confirm this.

Perhaps someone else experiencing the same issues could test this hypothesis?

After 3 very annoying days i decided to downgrade the following 7 packages
from sid to the testing repository:

libc6:amd64 (2.13-21)
libc6-dev:amd64 (2.13-21)
libc6-i386:amd64 (2.13-21) if you use this
libc-bin:amd64 (2.13-21)
libc-dev-bin:amd64 (2.13-21)
locales:amd64 (2.13-21)
multiarch-support:amd64 (2.13-21)

This FIXED the problem for me!
In the 2.13-22 Version of these Packages (in SID) must be a big Bug.


HOWTO at your own risk:
make a new empty folder.
download ALL the 7 packages manually into this folder
from http://packages.debian.org/search?searc ... ords=libc6
choose the version 2.13-21 from wheezy (testing) and take care of amd64 or i386.
open a terminal and go to the folder
execute: sudo dpkg -i *.deb
now the packages will be downgraded
reboot...

i have no dependency problems after this action.
its a good idea to pin these packages after success and wait for better days.
i wonder why the aptosid guys seem not to have this problem.
