apt-listbugs lists a bug for libc6 that apparently causes the Shell to lock up when switching workspaces, something I never encountered since I only ever use one workspace. I did notice that the unstable libc packages break audio playback though, and for that reason I've been holding them back.

In Synaptic, you can select the libc packages all at once, then go to the Package menu and select "Lock Version".

I'm not sure how to pin packages from a terminal, perhaps someone else could explain that for you if necessary.

Apt-pinning is not the easiest thing to set up, but if you use command line to update. I believe its the only way to hold packages back.

As karashata explained locking the version in synaptic is the easiest way. But be aware that if you later switch to the command line to update-upgrade all packages will upgrade (if not apt pinned).

7.12 How do I put a package on hold?

There are three ways of holding back packages, with dpkg, aptitude or with dselect.

With dpkg, you have to export the list of package selections, with:

dpkg --get-selections \* > selections.txt

Then edit the resulting file selections.txt, change the line containing the package you wish to hold, e.g. libc6, from this:

libc6 install

to this:

libc6 hold

Save the file, and reload it into dpkg database with:

dpkg --set-selections < selections.txt

With aptitude, you can hold a package using

aptitude hold package_name

and remove the hold with

aptitude unhold package_name

With dselect, you have to enter the [S]elect screen, find the package you wish to hold in its present state, and press the `=' key (or `H'). The changes will go live immediately after you exit the [S]elect screen.

To hold packages back i use this commands in a root terminal:

If there are packages in a update noted as new install, the command works too if the pks are not wanted. It is ineffectively
after a reboot then.

The libc stuff only seems to be buggy as 64bit pks. No problem with it on my 32bit system.

I am using 2.13.22 and apart from a couple of minor Chrome freezes when playing flash my system is working as it should. Mine is AMD64 with Nvidia drivers (DKMS). I have not touched Pulse.

Even the Chrome freezes seem to have gone since yesterday. I have had a few updates in the last 24 hours and i have had no Chrome issues since.

There are a lot of possible combinations of hardware, drivers and software, maybe I am just lucky.

I was having major Chrome freezes this morning, but after updating whatever sid offered (which wasn't much, but included a libdrm package that hasn't fixed the video crashing problem for me yet) Chrome is working well for me again.

Think it was sysv-rc sysvinit sysvinit-utils because of the speed I was dumped to a prompt. Python-numpy is the reason so many things want to get removed.

After 3 very annoying days i decided to downgrade the following 7 packages
from sid to the testing repository:

libc6:amd64 (2.13-21)
libc6-dev:amd64 (2.13-21)
libc6-i386:amd64 (2.13-21) if you use this
libc-bin:amd64 (2.13-21)
libc-dev-bin:amd64 (2.13-21)
locales:amd64 (2.13-21)
multiarch-support:amd64 (2.13-21)

This FIXED the problem for me!
In the 2.13-22 Version of these Packages (in SID) must be a big Bug.


HOWTO at your own risk:
make a new empty folder.
download ALL the 7 packages manually into this folder
from http://packages.debian.org/search?searc ... ords=libc6
choose the version 2.13-21 from wheezy (testing) and take care of amd64 or i386.
open a terminal and go to the folder
execute: sudo dpkg -i *.deb
now the packages will be downgraded
reboot...

i have no dependency problems after this action.
its a good idea to pin these packages after success and wait for better days.
i wonder why the aptosid guys seem not to have this problem.

I had to add libc-dev-bin to your list before I could install the downgraded libc-bin. I also went into both Synaptic and MintUpdater to ignore updates to those packages.

Can anyone tell me if a relog is needed to start using the downgraded packages?

apt-listbugs lists a critical bug for sysvinit causing the system to break on reboot, so I guess I'm holding sysv packages back today.

There also appear to be newer libc packages in this batch, hopefully these have fixed the issues present in the last version.

Confirmed libc problem fixed. SysV problem - reported that earlier, tried again still crashes and burns.

I think I found the right fit for my machine and it's operator. LMDE_Xfce everything seems to click together quit well. I'm even gotten bored running in SID.

Still too shell shocked to give Gnome 3 another try. I think I'll stay here and be bored for awhile.
