Here is a quick way to get started into Folding@Home. If you don't know what Folding@Home is, it is a project that finds cures for diseases by borrowing spare processes from you CPU that you are not using. It has a low priority and does not affect performance, becides working as a nice burn-in program for your box being that the CPU is at %100 at all times!

All you have to do is install Origami from the repos. It is a script made for Ubuntu that takes the hassle of installing it by hand.

First download Origami:

sudo apt-get install origami

The program will download

Then set up the client:

sudo origami install -u "USERNAME" -t "TEAM NUMBER"

(Insert "76140" for the team number )

Your all set. You can check the status by typing "origami status" and check the stats by typing "origami stats"

I will try to scrap together a couple computers from the various components i have i should be able to make 2 lesser computers that i can run the program on specifically (and by lesser i mean under 2.0ghz processor single core)

I used one single core AMD64 for a year and was doing quite well when I was folding for Team Ubuntu. Shoot, right now I only have one Opteron X2 with DDR and it is doing OK. When I get my store up and running I will hopefully have multiple computers folding for "donations".

lol i don't think you understand...the components in which I am talking about are 300(ish) mb of rambus and as far as i can tell a .9 ghz computer

You can use the same user name on multiple instances of the FAH client.

i didn't know anything about this, thank you for showing me. i started using linux because it was a bunch of people sort of giving back to the community, at least now i can sort of do my part. is there anything else like this that can be done?

For those who participate in Folding@Home I hope you will also concider participating in
World Community Grid. They do research in mostly medical sciences.
Also it might be a little easer for novice users to deal with because of the Boinc Manager GUI.
All you need to do is go to Package Manager and type in Boinc in search box and install
Boinc-manager & boinc-client. Then when the program first starts it will ask you to "attach to project"
Choose World Community Grid , make up a user name and password .
When boinc first starts up choose Advanced View. Then there will be settings, a way to view activity, etc...
They don't have any GPU projects right now , only work on CPU , but that may change pretty soon.

If you want you can always join the Mint Team there
It seems I am all alone over there for now...

P.S. For beginners it is probably easiest to participate only in the Help Conquer Cancer project.
They are the quickest and easiest on system resources.
If you have any questions they have a pretty good forum too.

The "Help Conquer Cancer" project may or may not have work right now but there are plenty of other worthy projects to participate in.
The "Clean Energy Project" is probably not a good one to start out with unless you have a pretty high end system and fast internet.
The upload files for CEP2 can be rather large.

I see one of our Mint team members ( Disturbed ) is back contributing again after a little time off.

Looks like awhile back Folding@Home was able to be run from BOINC. Not sure if that is still true now though. It would be nice because BOINC lets you participate in multiple projects at once. I have a dual core processor machine. While one processor works on one project, the other handles a different project. I run three projects, and they switch off regularly.

Hello All,

I've installed the BOINC manager and client on my system. This system is a headless and I connect to it either by SSH or Webmin. I'm getting the following error after install origami. I run the command "origami -u "username" -t "team number"

tr: extra operand `w'
Try `tr --help' for more information.
ERROR: SIZE OPTION REQUIRES: small, normal or big

Anyone know how to fix this error?
