Howdy.
After my laptop decided to fry itself twice (I fixed it the first time, it lasted a couple of months, and fried again) I decided I was going to build a desktop.
After Hmming and hahing, my good lady wife (another recent acquisition) gave me a budget of €600 to get one.
I decided to go with a:
i5 2400
Asrock H61M-S mobo
8GB G. Skill Ram
Sapphire HD6870 1G
All wrapped up in a Xigmatek Asgard 3
Didn't factor a Windows purchase into it, as I had a copy of XP, and wanted to go with a Linux distro.
I had previous burned a few distros (Mint 8, Fedora 12, PuppyLinux, and Xubuntu) which I had been messing with, I knew they were all working, MD5sum'ed them.
I received the components in the mail on Monday, after work, and spent that night putting together my new toy. Then started to install Mint 8.
Well, I say started. Disc wouldn't read. Crap.
Tried Fedora. No joy. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF... it.
Xubuntu? Got to the install screen after some changes, but was getting i/o errors no matter what I changed.
Last chance, PuppyLinux. Same.
More changes. Got Xubuntu to install, but wouldn't recognise a lot of the components.
GParted that mofo, and started again.
Well, long story short, I got Mint 12 D/led to a usb in work (bold me, shouldn't be doing that), installed XP just to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue. All fine. Burned the Mint 12 from the USB to DVD, and away she went. Nice, easy, install, just have to reseat the 6870 because XP wouldn't recognise it on install.
So, yeah. A fairly happy user so far! (true it has been about 5 hours and I had to leave for work.)
