LMDE constant broken packages

Post by latinhawk »

I have tried both LMDE editions, latest version. As soon as install finishes and I try to get the latest updates the problem with constant broken packages starts. If I try to bypass the updater then the changelog shows up in terminal and can't complete the updaste and the updater won't work either. If I try to get the system to auto fix on boot nothing happens no repairs made.

Hello, Thanks for responding,

I'm a little hazy on exactly when I burned my LMDE dvd -- I don't know why I didn't put a burn date on the disc. I did, however, put a burn date the Linux Mint Xfce dvd that I burned within a few days of burning the LMDE, which is March 30, 2011.

Pythzor,
I did, however, put a burn date the Linux Mint Xfce dvd that I burned within a few days of burning the LMDE, which is March 30, 2011.
this tells me almost everything i need :oops: at the best it's one of the 201104 respin;
i'm afraid that install today and update one of those isos (worse if it's even older) is is an impossible task.
the update path is broken, since they were respinned LMDE went through deep chances (today every single lib. in the system is new and very different - sometimes several versions up - from the ones present in those isos;

let's see: LMDE is a rolling release, if you install today you might never need to reinstall, but you can't expect that a iso released in december or april will successfully update from scratch today (even if you leave one install "abandoned" for a month you can get yourself in troubles :D )

even if (even) there was a minimum chance for this to work, i (in your place) wouldn't take the risk: you would d/l a lot more in updates (above 1gig) than get one of the new respins (201109)
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1818
after install (and before any update) look at this as well

Sorry bud, already did that.

However, I have gotten it to work two different times on two different boots. I'll come back with my results once i've tested my method on several boots. Hopefully, it will be a fix for those few of us who are stuck with this distribution...

UPDATE:

No luck. After upgrading/updating, one finds that you are given no capabilities (no commands work, mouse doesn't work), and upon reboot, it's even worse. No gui, and Network Manager no longer works (referring to libm.so.2... saying no file or directory exists... but why does the network manager need that?). So basically i'm stuck at a terminal with no internet. My guess is - there are so many bugs present here that's it's causing applications to fail everywhere.

My advice?

apt-get upgrade

And leave it at that. Better yet, just stick with what you got, don't even upgrade - no knowin if you're just gonna end up messing up your system further...

  • check the iso from where you are trying to install.
  • when did you d/w it?
  • is it one of the new respins? the 201109 iso - http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1818
  • or is it (as it seems) one old d/w, a old iso (from april? older?)
  • doesn't surprise me that you can't get a functional system if you're trying with an older iso
good luck

Iso? D/W?
It was not a new respin, I downloaded this iso back in November/December. I'm guessing the one that I managed to grab at that time, gave a lot of bugs... all these little things i'm encountering.

Haha! Good news. One of my DVDs lying around was R/w. Put the 201109 iso on my system, and THANK GOD I did! I can finally get all the little programs I want to work (Dosbox, Vim, Pcsx, Virtualbox, etc.), and the updates work!
On top of that, a lot of other distributions (Windows xp, vista, 7, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Puppy linux, etc etc.) would simply not work on my computer, or wouldn't install all the applications I wanted to install. Ubuntu got the closest I've seen (until this iso), but it wouldn't run Pcsx correctly, it would not run Runescape on Firefox (results in a crash, download Chromium and it runs incredibly slow in that browser), it was overall just generally slow, and surprisingly crashed a lot.
This distribution is freaking perfect for my computer, and what's even cooler, is I didn't have to spend money on some Dvd's. xD
